English I Classroom Expectations, Procedures, and Policies

EXPECTATIONS: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Expectations for Classroom Behavior and Management:
1. Be Respectful: Value each other’s opinion, culture, race, gender, religion, etc.
a. Talking while someone else “has the floor” is unacceptable.
b. Racist, sexist, or derogatory names/statements/jokes will not be tolerated.
c. Sexual harassment will not be tolerated.
d. Bullying will not be tolerated
e. Yelling and/or “talking back” are forms of insubordination and are unacceptable.
2. Be Punctual:
Be in your class before the tardy bell rings. Not being in class when the bell rings, entering my
classroom while the bell is ringing, or entering after the bell has rung counts as tardy.
If you are tardy, you must report to the sweep station and be escorted by a staff member to class. If
you fail to report to the sweep station, you will be counted absent.
3. Be Responsible
a. Take responsibility for your own actions. Don’t play the blame game.
b. Know when assignments are due by using a planner or agenda.
c. Make-up work is your responsibility. Check the “Missed Work” box upon your return. Review
the assignments, and then ask me any questions during warm-up time. Complete the make-up
work at home within the allotted time, so you do not fall further behind.
d. Cheating will result in a zero for all involved.
e. Students will be expected to keep the classroom clean and pick up after themselves.
f. Follow the student code of conduct.
4. Be Prepared:
a. Have your supplies before you enter the room.
b. Pencils, notebook paper, and highlighters will not be provided.

Consequences for Choosing to Not Follow the Class Rules:

5. Discipline Referral to administrator


A violation of the classroom expectations or student code of
conduct may result in an immediate discipline
referral/removal from the classroom
Severe/Repeated discipline issues will result in a negative
conduct grade, which may have implications for those wishing
to be eligible for National Honor Society, Student Council,
etc.

Procedures for Beginning Class:
1. Be seated and silently working on the warm-up before the tardy bell sounds. Conversation is “0”.
2. Complete the day’s warm-up within time requirements.
3. Dock your phone.

No one is dismissed by the bell. I dismiss the class.
Return all supplies/books to their proper location.
Verify your area is clean before attempting to leave and place your chair under your desk.
Double-check your planner to ensure that you have the proper assignment/homework written down.
If work is due at the end of the period, make sure your work is turned in with your name and correct heading.
Do not run or push your way out.

TITLE OF ASSIGNMENT

All assignments must have the correct heading, or ten points will be deducted.
All assignments must be neatly written or typed, or they will not be graded.
All assignments must conform to Standard American English usage and mechanics.
All handwritten assignments must be written in blue or black ink, no sparkle pens.
Absent: If you know you will be absent, ask me for your work in advance. If you do not know that you will be
absent, check the “Missed Work” box the day you return. It is your responsibility to get your make-up work and
ask any questions you may have; it is then my responsibility to ensure that you understand the directions. You
will have one day for each day you are absent to complete your make-up work. If you are aware of a test or
assignment in advance and you are absent on the date that it is due, the assignment/test will be due the next day
that you are in attendance.

Tutorials:
If at any time you need help with an assignment or need to access a computer to complete an
assignment, I encourage you to attend tutorials. Simply show up, sign in on the tutorial roster and begin work.
Don’t forget to sign out before you leave. The tutorial schedule for English I is posted outside of classrooms.
See me to schedule an alternative time if you are unavailable during those time slots. You are also welcome to
attend tutorials of any other English I teacher.
Late Work: Late work is unacceptable. If on the RARE circumstance, your work is late:
For daily grades: 1 day late 70 max; thereafter, teacher discretion with a maximum of 50.
For major grades: 1 day late 75; 2nd day late 60; thereafter, teacher discretion with a max. of 50.
Turning in work late does not guarantee the maximum late grade.
Homework: Students should expect homework, including reading assignments, re-entering notes, studying,
writing, etc.. Expectations for quality are the same as in-class work.
GENERAL POLICIES:
Seating Chart: Students will be seated in a systematic manner. If needed, students may be seated closer to the
focus of instruction. Seating arrangements will change from time-to-time depending on the lesson/unit.
Binder Dividers Labels: You will be required to keep an English binder and to keep it organized.

Web Page: Consult my web page on the Ridge Point High School Prowler web site for important information,
due dates, assignments, and documents.
Edmodo: All students will be required to sign up on Edmodo to access resources.
Printing: Students will not be allowed to print assignments using classroom computers. Students must either
print from home or make arrangements in advance to print in the library. Otherwise the assignment is late
(consult late work policy). Students will not be sent to the library during class to print.
In addition, in order for students to use a school computer whether it’s in the classroom or the library, students
must have signed an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). To use the library computers, students must have on their
possession a valid student ID. If you print in the library, it will cost 10 cents per page.
COMPUTER USAGE: No IM; NO Chat; NO Social Networking Sites; No Gaming. By Mrs. McGoldrick’s
policy: No Wikipedia; No Search Engines except On-line Library Resources or other sites approved by me or
the librarians.
Turn-it-in.com. All essays will be submitted through Turn-it-in.com to detect possible plagiarism. Plagiarism
will result in a Zero on the assignment. Students are allowed one account. It is your responsibility to keep
track of your login (email address) and password. Any additional accounts will automatically be removed.
You have one opportunity to turn in the final draft of your assignment. Be sure it is the correct draft before
submitting. Your first submission will be the assignment that is graded.
Electronic Communication: Electronic communication is an extension of the classroom environment. All
communication must be respectful and responsible. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary consequences.
Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty. All students will sign and adhere to the Ridge Point Honor Code.
Responsible Use Policy. ONLY AFTER OBTAINING MY PERMISSION TO DO SO, students may use
electronic devices in my classroom FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES RELATED TO MY CLASSROOM
Otherwise, the device will be confiscated and turned over to the proper authority. If your phone is lost or stolen
in class, it is your responsibility. Use the docking station on your desk if you plan on using your device in my
classroom. Your phone will be turned off and face down on the desk until you are given verbal permission to
access your device.
