IDS INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT STUDIES IDS 2001 Introduction to International Development Studies 3 ch (3C) [W] Examines the major social, economic and political characteristics of the Third World, and discusses underdevelopment, dependency, the bases of political and economic domination of the Third World by the developed world, social stratification, the position of elites and the interaction of culture and poverty. Offered annually. IDS 3002 Seminar in International Development Studies 3 ch (3C) [W] Deals intensively with all the major issues of development studies and the relationship between the developed and the developing world. Some of the issues covered are globalization, foreign aid, women and development, trade liberalization, ethnic rivalries, urbanization and poverty. Prerequisite: IDS 2001 . IDS 4003 IDS Practicum 3 ch The student will be required to conceptualize , create and complete a project in partnership with the staff of the MCAF( Multicultural Association of Fredericton) or similar agency. This project must deal with issues such as refugees, resettlement or cultural readjustment. The student will be mentored by the staff of the MCAF and the Director of IDS, and must chronicle and critically reflect on his/her work as it progresses. This experience will provide the student with valuable practical skills and opportunities to acquire insights into and better understanding and knowledge of new-immigrant and refugee groups. Enrollment will be limited. Prerequisite IDS 2001 and the permission of the Director. IDS 4900 Honours Thesis in International Development Studies 6 ch [W] An in-depth independent research project on an important issue concerning development studies. Offered annually. Prerequisite: IDS 3002
