Fig. S1 Growth differences of twenty naturally isolated C. bombi strains.
Optical density (OD) is given as the parameter for growth rate. C. bombi strains were obtained
from faeces of naturally infected queens. Each strain was cultured in liquid media at 27 °C and
3% CO2. OD was measured for each strain after 72 h. OD is given as a mean value (S.D.) of triplicate
lines. Growth is ranked according to speed (fastest to slowest).

Fig. S2 Standard optical density (OD) for C. bombi cell concentrations
The curve demonstrates the mean OD measured for five different C. bombi strains (genotypes).
(Strain IDs: 08.068, 08.161, 08.075, 08.261, 08.076). Each strain was tested in triplicate.
Regression line is: cells/ml = 5.32 + 6.17*OD; r2=0.542, p < 0.001.

Fig S3 Calibration of OD for cell counts.
The curve was obtained by measuring serial dilutions of cells cultures of five strains of C. bombi. The
regression line is: cells = (OD-0.097) / 1.5 x 10-6; r2 = 0.95, p < 0.001. The intercept is the OD for
pure culture medium (without cells). Data from: Ulrich Y (2011) Evolutionary ecology of parasite
