Objective(s) (what do you want them to learn) – 1) Students will analyze their reading styles from practicing silent and out loud reading. 2) Students will be able to compare the styles of the Middle English time period with their own. Materials – 1) Texts 2)Material for taking/making notes Activities (in class) – Silent reading of the pilgrim’s tale. (35 minutes) Discuss the difficulty of the language, why it is difficult, and the role that plays in the literature. Was the writing difficult to read? Why was it difficult? What characteristics of ME literature make the reading difficult? Was it more difficult to read silently or aloud? Why? From which method did you comprehend more? (10 minutes) Again fill in a KWL on the new material (to be done as they read and during discussion) (5 minutes to finish up). Evaluation (how do you know they learned it) – At the end each day the students will hand in the KWL and it will be a written documentation of What they Know, What they Want to know, and What they Learned. Information about the material will be included on a final test at the end of the unit. The class discussions should also reveal their thoughts on the reading and their ability to analyze their own reading styles.
