Teacher Instructions Revision Dinner Party! Equipment Needed:Paper Plates – 2 per pupil Paper Tablecloths – 1 per group Paper Napkins – 1 per pupil Highlighters/Felt Pens – enough for whole class (Just to add more fun you can add hats, masks, balloons, paper cups for drinks and a few nibbles/drinks to make it more realistic!) Teachers Instructions: You may find a better way, feel free to adapt as we are all different – but a key issue for me during these lesson is for the pupils to ‘learn together’, so I really wanted lots of conversations to be going on during the party. Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. Prepare the napkins and the plates first – Have two sets of plates and a napkin per pupil. I have a class of 24 pupils in Year 11 – so I printed out 2 copies of 12 revision question (4 -6) mark questions and numbered each plate 1 -12 with the corresponding question on each numbered plate with the exam question glued on the back. On 12 napkins, I folded them in half and put a key concept like ‘Franchises’, ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy’, ‘Business Objectives’ on the top and again repeat this on the other set of 12. Prepare an 8 mark question for the group activity and this will be used by each group which will be written on the tablecloth. Buy all the ‘party’ stuff! Lay out the room into groups of 4/5 (Make sure that questions and napkins are mixed up) – Swap rooms if you have to, mine is an ICT Suite so I had to! Set the tables up with the table cloths – 2 paper plates (1 Blank and 1 with the question on the top. Then lay the napkin on top). Delivery 1. I am a huge fan of using music within the lesson to set a tone/inspire/calm a class – so as the pupils came in I had Kool and the Gang – Celebrate playing (Don’t judge me!) to create the party atmosphere! Tell the class that this party is to CELEBRATE all of their fantastic knowledge of a particular topic. STARTER 2. 3. Get the pupils to look at their napkins – pupils will have a key concept on their napkin and will have 3 minutes to come up with as many key terms relating to the topic as they can on the bottom of the napkin in felt pen/highlighter. Once the 3 minutes is up, they will then move seats to sit by the person who has the same key term as them and compare their ‘napkins’ – they then have 2 minutes to discuss and add anything to their own napkin that they partner has on theirs. Teacher Instructions SORBET! CHARADES!!! – No dinner party is complete unless there are party games! During this 5 minute ‘sorbet’ invite (or pick!) 2 pupils to play charades – give them a key concept to act out! Kids love this! FISH COURSE 1. 2. Under the first plate will be the 4-6 mark question ready to be answered. Pupils now have to ‘tuck’ in to this course and really get to grips with basic knowledge of the main areas of the topic and write the answers on the front of the plate. Once the 3 minutes is up, the pupils will then have to find the person with the correlating number to theirs and compare answers – adding in anything that they have discussed to their plate. SORBET! YES/NO game! Another fun game to break up the lesson – have two or three pupils come out and play the yes/no game using key terms from the revision topic. (Maybe have some small chocolates for prizes!) MAIN COURSE Now it’s time to get each table working as a group. They will be given a real ‘steak’ of a question – 8 marks where they will have to recommend and evaluate to get full marks. Each group is given the SAME QUESTION Together, in their groups they will write their answer to the question all over the tablecloth on their desk! I advised my class to use ‘thinking hats’ – so start from the left side of the desk with the red hat and then end on the left with the green hat (or top to bottom depending on desk size). DO NOT SHARE PUPILS ANSWERS AT THIS POINT. SORBET! Teacher TalkAbout! Now – this is the chance for the whole class to beat the teacher!!! Tell the class that you are going to step outside the classroom for 2 minutes while together they come up with the top 10 key terms/concepts that you must be included in the ‘steak question’ and that you as the teacher need to mention when you come back in the room! So you will need a pupil with a stop watch (usually their phone) and a pupil with the 10 key concepts written down to tick off during the task. As the teacher, you need to stand in the front of the room and when the pupil with the stop watch says start – you have 1 minute to list as many key terms and concepts relating to the examination question as you can. THE PUPILS ALWAYS WIN! DESSERT (plenary) With the second plate – get the pupils to create a ‘Commemorative Plate’ of the occasion! This will bring together all that they have covered in the lesson! This can be in the form of a mind map/spider diagram/pictures etc. INVITE Just as another layer to the plenary – get the pupils to complete their invite to the next revision dinner party – asking them the 3 areas they would like to be covered at the next party and why. Enjoy your party!
