Major Objectives:

Writing Mechanics


Students will answer comprehension questions about “Thank
you, Ma’m” in complete sentences using the SLAM organizer.
Students will write simple and compound sentences.
Vocabulary

Students are working with Greek and Latin root words,
prefixes, and suffixes. This week, we will work with the root
word man, manu (hand). Quiz over these words will be
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21. Vocabulary words using this root
word are:
 emancipate (v)
to set free; to lend a hand in freeing someone; to release
from someone’s hands
 manacles (n)
handcuffs
 manager (n)
a person who has the upper hand; a person who is in
charge of someone or something

Students will review vocabulary “Thank You, Ma’m” by
Langston Hughes. Test over these words will be


Students will sequence the events in “Thank You, Ma’m” and
each class will complete a plot diagram to identify the
following elements in the story:

Students will take a major test Monday, October 20, over their
comprehension of “Thank You, Ma’m.”

Learning Activities the Week of October 13, 2014
Monday:
Students will take a quiz over the “ped” words.
Student will finish sequencing events and will determine where on the
plot diagram each event occurs.
Tuesday:
Students will review vocabulary words:
 Circumstances (noun)
 Commit (verb)
 Consequence (noun)
 Contact (noun)
 Empathy (noun)
 Juvenile (noun)
 Maturity (noun)
 Salvage (verb)
Students will work with new vocabulary man, manu.
Each class will complete their plot diagram poster.
Students will practice writing simple and compound sentences.
Wednesday: All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will take the PSAT in their
homerooms.

Students will continue to write simple and compound sentences.
Students will begin writing a paragraph about “Thank You, Ma’m”
using the SLAM method. A copy of the SLAM outline is at the end of
this document.
Friday:
Students will continue writing the paragraph about “Thank You,
Ma’m” using the SLAM method.
Students will review “Thank You, Ma’m” for the MAJOR TEST Monday,
October 20.
