Mrs. Colleen Stavinoha English 1, 2, 3, and 4 (Modified) Each student who comes to me has goals on his or her IEP. These goals will be worked on all year. Goals with objectives for all levels of English (Modified) are: READING GOAL: By May 2015, all students will increase their beginning of the year Lexile score by 10%. STEPS TO REACH THIS GOAL Students will read a variety of texts from a variety of genres with accuracy that supports comprehension. Students will successfully learn and employ the following comprehension strategies: Author’s purpose Connections: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world Summarizing Inferencing Questioning Predicting Identifying similarities and differences Note-taking Using graphic organizers Sequencing Visualizing Students will successfully learn and employ the following vocabulary tools and strategies: Using connotation and denotations Using context clues Understanding words with multiple meanings Breaking words down into affixes, suffixes, prefixes, and roots WRITING AND WRITTEN CONVENTIONS GOAL: By May 2015, all students will write a 5- 7-sentence organized paragraph, with 80% correct capitalization, grammar, structure, punctuation, and spelling. STEPS TO REACH THIS GOAL: Students will write for different purposes, including short answer responses, literary compositions, and expository compositions. Students will choose an appropriate genre based on audience/purpose. Students will determine a thesis/controlling idea that is sustained throughout the written piece. Students will plan writing using graphic organizers and apply effective revising and editing strategies Students will use correct capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling in their writing. Students will write effectively in timed and open-ended situations. Students will successfully employ the 6+ Writing Traits to become better writers. Students will successfully use graphic organizers to structure their writing. BEHAVIOR/ACADEMIC/SOCIAL GOAL -SETTING GOAL: By May 2015, all students will reach the personal goal they have set for themselves. STEPS TO REACH THIS GOAL: Students will write a goal (a behavior goal, an academic goal, or a social goal) for themselves at the beginning of the year. They will list the steps they need to take to achieve the goal and the people who can help them reach their goal. Students will monitor their own progress each 6 weeks in a goal-setting journal.
