What are we learning?
Daily Objective:
I can evaluate the impact of Cold War rivalry on the arms race, space race, McCarthyism,
defense spending, and educational priorities.
I can describe the G.I. Bill as one cause of prosperity during the 1950’s and explain increased
consumption and the growth of suburbs, agriculture, and businesses as effects of that
prosperity.
TEKS/AP/Standards: ⓈUSH.8B Describe how Cold War tensions were intensified by the
arms race, the space race, McCarthyism, and the House Un-American Activities Committee
(HUAC), the findings of which were confirmed by the Verona Papers.
ⓇUSH.17B Identify the causes of prosperity in the 1950s, including the Baby Boom and the
impact of the GI Bill (Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944), and the effects of prosperity
in the 1950s such as increased consumption and the growth of agriculture and business.

Daily Objective: I can describe the rivalries of the Cold War including the ideas of a balance
of power between the US [representing democracy] and the Soviet Union [representing
communism].
I can tell how Cold War rivalries affected the arms race, the space race, McCarthysism [HUAC
and Vernona Papers], increased defense spending and shifting educational priorities toward
math/science.
