1) Norton text problem 10-3. HOWEVER – only provide side view and end view SKETCHES
of your shaft and bearing mounts including locations for sprocket and pedal attachment. No
computations are required.
2) Norton text problem 10-6a. Use l=20 inch, a=16 inch, b=18 inch, P=1000 lbf, Tmin=0,
Tmax=2000 in.lbf . Use standard ANSI key width and determine key length for infinite life in
direct shear with 90% reliability.
3) What is the maximum force F that this shaft can support on its hydrodynamic bearings?
What is the minimum film thickness?
F
Speed: 1800 RPM
Bearing DIA.: 3 inches
Bearing length: 1 inch
Viscosity: 10 reyns
Clearance ratio: 0.001
8”
2”
ON: 25
Extra credit – Use MATLAB to develop a linear equation that approximates absolute viscosity
of SAE engine oil grades 10 through 70 as a function of bulk temperature over the range of 100°
F through 220° F. Provide a 3D plot of your data and your approximations with SAE grade on
the X axis, temperature on the Y axis and log(visosity) on the Z axis.
