Savannah State University Position Description – Bursar POSITION DESCRIPTION: Position Title: Bursar FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs Department: Financial Services Date Prepared: March, 2015 BASIC FUNCTION The Bursar is responsible for management of student accounts and account receivables for the University. All billings for the university are handled through the office of the Bursar with the exception of restricted account billings. All cash receipting is also handled through the office of the Bursar with the main purpose of safeguarding the university’s assets. NATURE & SCOPE Reporting directly to the Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs, the incumbent in the position works with students and parents on student balances and payment arrangements; also processes student refunds, establishes deadlines and ensures compliance while adhering to university policies and procedures. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES Supervise the area of the Bursar’s office Maintain the accounts receivable Perform reconciliations Process return of Title IV aid for all withdrawals Perform maintenance required for smooth operation of systems Work with parents, students, and other offices concerning student balances and questions Establishment and maintenance of revenue detail costs Ensure fee tables are established and properly assess students attending SSU Work with Comptroller’s office to ensure all assessed revenue in subsidiary letter is properly recorded in general ledger SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A four year degree with knowledge and proficiency in using Microsoft, Excel, Word, Banner, and PeopleSoft; knowledge of the Board of Regents and the United States Department of Education policies and procedures required. Must have a demonstrative mastery of techniques, practices and theories that are important to SSU; must be capable of devising procedures to ensure internal controls are in place; ability to make quick decisions with wide impact also required.
