This course exposed me to the gender dynamics in rural areas, problems involved when collecting data from men and women, particularly at household levels. My education background, professional training and experience as a teacher and a teacher educator in the School of Education, have enabled me to understand broader educational issues in the country and beyond. Specifically, my understanding of the teaching and learning process, school community interaction, the role of the teacher in the promotion of peace and conflict resolution, promotion of equity and equality, promotion of child rights in the school system has been enhanced. I am also conversant with research management at institutional and individual level, learning organizational and managing organizational change. 2. I also have a Graduate Diploma in Policy Studies from the University of Alberta, Canada. This was obtained during a one-year intensive course on various issues such as Peace Education, Global Education; theories and strategies, Functions of Education in development, gender issues, curricula issues, educational research and teacher education, Historical Studies of Education, Advance Curricula Studies, Peace and Multicultural Education, Rural Sociology, Writing and Publication. 3. I have also conducted research on indigenous knowledge systems in Uganda, jointly with member of the Department of Educational Foundations and Management. I was able to explore different knowledge systems in Uganda, especially in Kigezi, Buganda and Teso, the districts of Lira and Gulu and Busia. The content included knowledge systems on education, medicine, wealth and economic activities, environment and agriculture. The research also enabled me to explore utilization and preservation of the different knowledge systems in the communities studied and how schools could utilize indigenous knowledge. 4. I also participated together with a team of 5 in an evaluation of school environmental programmes in Uganda. All these research and experiences have strengthened my understanding of different issues. 5. I also participated in designing a pedagogy-training package for university academic staff together with a UNESCO consultant and a team of 5. The main content of the program is teaching, learning and evaluation in higher education. This program was drawn with the intention of providing basic pedagogical training for non-teachers at the university. This program has been used for training Makerere University staff since 1990. Team leader: I have also participated in a research on Capacity Building for Teachers in post conflict areas: A case study of Northern Uganda (funded by DFID). It bring together 5 universities namely Stranmillis University (Northern Ireland), Rwanda Institute of Education, (Rwanda), Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, Kyambogo University (Uganda) Makerere University (Uganda) 7. Member: I have also participated in a tripartite partnership (Minesota University, USA, Naruto University, Japan and Makerere University, Uganda). This project involved strengthening head teachers’ management skills. We started by collecting data on head teachers’ level of confidence in performing some management functions. The data was used to write a training manual. I participated in the training of head teachers 8. I was a member of a project involving Open University UK and Makerere University. (Together with school teachers, members of National Curriculum Development Centre, Uganda National Examination Board and some publishers). This Project involved developing materials for secondary school teachers. The main intention was to provide materials for teachers especially those in resource deficient settings.
