Second Grade
Reading
As quarter 2 begins, the
students will be asking and
answering questions using
informational text.
We will also be using context
clues to increase knowledge of
vocabulary.
We will begin using fables and
folktales and discussing a
character’s response to events
and challenges.
Toward the end of the quarter,
the students will explore
Junior Great
BooksStudies
to enhance
Social
collaborative
conversations.
The
students will
use
geographical tools to locate and
describe places on Earth. They
will think about what they
already know about places on a
map and how that helps them
determine new
terms.
Math
We have been organizing data
to construct bar graphs,
picture graphs, and tally
charts.
In Quarter 2, we will be
working with odd and even
numbers, addition within 100
and subtraction within 100.
To build fluency with mental
addition and subtraction
strategies within 20, please
practice these skills at home.
Towards the end of the
quarter, we will begin working
with coins and bills.
Writing
Students will write
informative/explanatory texts
in which they introduce a
topic, use facts and definitions
to develop points and provide
a concluding statement. They
will also participate in a shared
research writing project.
Science
Students will identify ways to
classify objects using
supportive evidence from
investigations of observable
properties.
Students will provide evidence
of similarities and differences
and how to classify them.
