COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION
A survey of the history of Western Art from the Renaissance to the present including painting, sculpture, and
architecture. The art will be viewed in its historical context and discussed with reference to the religious beliefs
and ideologies of the cultures which produced it.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Explain how a work of art reflects the history of the society in which it was produced, including the political,
and/or religious beliefs and ideologies prevailing in the culture.
Identify similarities and differences of works of art on the same, or related subjects, produced by different
artists in the same culture, and in different cultures at different times.
Explain the role of the artist in society during the time the work was made.
Discuss how methods of training artists and the role of women in society influenced the numbers of women
who became practicing artists.
Analyze a work of art and explain its function(s) in society at the time it was made.
Discuss how developments in the sciences, including the social sciences, and in technology, influenced the art
that was produced.
Distinguish between objective and non-objective art.
