COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION
A survey of the history of Western Art from Paleolithic cave painting through the end of the Middle Ages,
including painting, sculpture, and architecture. The art will be viewed in its historical context and discussed
with reference to the religious beliefs and ideologies of the cultures which produced it.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Identify works of art placing them in the time period, geographical area and/or culture where the art was
produced and explain the use of the work of art at the time it was created.
Explain how a work of art reflects the history of the society in which it was produced, including the political,
and/or religious beliefs and ideologies prevailing in the culture.
Identify similarities and differences of works of art on the same, or related subjects, produced by different
artists in the same culture, and in different cultures at different times.
Explain the role of the artist in society during the time the work was made.
Analyze a work of art and explain its function(s) in society at the time it was made.
Describe how ideas and methods of production were communicated from one society to another.
Describe archaeological dating methods used to place a work of art in time, and discuss the limitations of these
methods.
