ESW Open Seminar Series CIE Monday 20th October, 4.30pm Room 104, Fulton Speaker Professor Kate Nash, Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London, presents: Sociology of Human Rights: Culture, Structures, Organisations ____________________________________ What do sociologists have to contribute to the study of human rights? In this seminar, Professor Nash argues that a sociological perspective that takes meanings, structures and organisations into account, can help avoid over-simplifying what is needed to realise human rights in practice. The metaphor of ‘top down’ or ‘bottom up’ often invoked is inadequate to this complexity – what is needed are fundamental changes in structures that can only be achieved both by changes in everyday common-sense, and at the same time in law and public policy. __________________________________ This seminar can be joined remotely by logging on to: https://connectpro.sussex.ac.uk/cie_nash20oct14 This seminar will also be recorded and available to view retrospectively at: www.sussex.ac.uk/education/seminars
