Speaker
Professor Suzy Braye & Dr Liz McDonnell,
University of Sussex, present:
‘Participatory action research: the “Talking Dads” project’
____________________________________
The Talking Dads project brought together young fathers,
a voluntary organisation and university researchers to
explore the lived experience of young fatherhood using a
participatory action research approach in which young
fathers took a lead role in developing and conducting
interviews with peer participants.
This seminar explores five critical points which became
sites for negotiation of the delicate balance of powers
between participants – initial engagement, translating
research ideas into research tools, research ethics, the
academic researcher’s role and the differential impacts on
the lives of all involved. This reflection on the research
process contributes to understandings about the
challenges of participatory research.
