ESW Open Seminar Series SOCIAL WORK Monday 23rd January, 5pm Room 104, Fulton Building, University of Sussex, Falmer (www.sussex.ac.uk/aboutus/findus/campusmaps.php) Speaker Dr Russell Whiting, Lecturer in Social Work and Social Care, University of Sussex presents: Presenting social work history through biography: Pitfalls and potentialities ____________________________________ Social work history has been an under-researched field in the UK, contributing to the profession being unsure of its foundations. How can this problem be addressed and social work history be best presented to students? In this seminar, Dr Whiting presents three thumbnail sketches of early twentieth century social workers: Dorothy Day (American), Alice Salomon (German) and Muriel Lester (English). But the presentation of these women as models is not without dangers, including hagiography and missing the broader sweep of historical development. Dr Whiting will attempt to negotiate these pitfalls and use history through biography to stimulate debate. * Refreshments available ** The seminar can be joined remotely by logging in to: https//connectpro.sussex.ac.uk/swwhiting23jan
