COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course guides the study and performance of intermediate piano literature with emphasis on tone production,
classical phrasing, and musical articulation through the Baroque repertoire. Students will critically evaluate
performances and develop fundamental piano performance skill.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

Sight read complex intermediate solo literature.
Practice effectively, using critical analysis to synthesize previously learned musical concepts and
skills.
3. Perform complex intermediate piano literature, demonstrating full, round tone, standard classical
phrasing, and simple articulations.
4. Aurally identify musical patterns and structures presented this term, for example, modal scales,
major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads.
5. Demonstrate minor scales, am, em, bm, c#m, f#m, dm, gm, cm, fm, two hands, parallel motion, two
octaves in quarter note and eighth note rhythms (m=80).
6. Demonstrate pianistic tone and flexibility through technical development.
7. Demonstrate inversions of major triads, hands together, two octaves, quarter note rhythm (m=80).
8. Research Romantic era piano literature.
9. Research Romantic era piano stylistic traits.

Scale forms – minor scales, in eighth note rhythms, with the metronome
Chords – chords and inversions, hands together, two octaves, with the metronome
Pedal – Una corda and Damper pedaling techniques
Studying pieces using more advanced rhythms involving shifting meters and accents,
syncopated patterns.
Performing late intermediate level solo repertoire pieces containing scale passages, varied
broken and arpeggiated bass figures, beginning chorale style, and other more complex
accompaniment styles.
Practicing functional activities that include sight reading fourth semester repertoire level
literature, composing projects using folk/traditional melodies or an original melody to
create variations in AB, ABA forms.
Developing analytical skills through written activities and the study of techniques for
expressive performance.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Lecture, demonstration and rehearsal, collaborative learning, research, performance evaluation, group and
individual practice.
