NEISD has an initiative to ensure that after high school, all students are prepared to enter

 Taking rigorous courses in middle school prepares students for college and career course work in high school

 Students wishing to rank in the top 10% of their high school class need to pursue rigorous academic courses to prepare for high school (UT Austin 7%)

LOOKING AHEAD 2016-2017

All students are required to take:

 Four semesters of PE in middle school. NEISD requires at least 1 semester per year. Athletics is a full year commitment (2 semesters) and substitutes for the PE requirement. A coach’s approval is required to participate in Athletics.

 Two semesters or one full year of fine arts must be taken over 3 years in middle school. This includes

Art, Band, Choir, Orchestra, or Theatre Arts

LOOKING AHEAD 2016-2017

 Students not successful on their STAAR tests will be given additional support classes in place of electives.

 May take a maximum of 2 high school Career &

Technology courses as elective credits for

Pre-AP courses are available to any students willing to take on the academic challenges. These courses are on-grade level academically advanced classes designed to challenge motivated students to understand rigorous content. The coursework requires students to engage in independent and analytical assignments and to complete a substantial amount of work outside of class. A counselor/teacher recommendation is strongly encouraged based on grades, benchmarks, and previous

STAAR scores.

Pre-AP courses offered:

7 th grade: English, Reading, Math (pre-Algebra)

8 th grade: English, Reading, Algebra I, History, Science

 Student and Parent must sign the Pre-AP course agreement form on the back of the course selection card.

The exit point for Pre-AP course is either at the end of the first three weeks or at the end of the nine-week grading period. If these exit points are missed, then the student will remain in the course for the remainder of the semester. A teacher-parent conference is required and teacher must submit Add/Drop form to counselor for a schedule change to be placed in a regular class.

 *Students must qualify through district testing for Gifted & Talented

Program. The GT classes offered are Math and English. Student must meet screening criteria: commended performance on STAAR and referring teacher must submit a Referral form to alpha counselor.
