1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Web Interface Designer within Integrated Marketing reports to the Manager, Application
Development. The Web Interface Designer is primarily responsible for designing website user
interfaces (“front-end” development) using modern development techniques and forward-thinking
strategy. The position seeks to balance aesthetic design with robust usability, offering website visitors
a better experience when trying to find information online. The position also consults on the
integration of web-based technologies and manages student interns as needed.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

70% - Website and Interface Design
 Conceptualize individual website elements and whole interface designs, both
independently and in collaboration with colleagues
 Develop prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript that function in a web browser
 Confirm that prototypes work across web browsers, devices and platforms
 Work with colleagues and customers to ensure prototype designs are properly translated
in the content management system
 Investigate college/department needs and objectives in order to develop appropriate
interfaces to meet website objectives
20% - Website Strategy and Planning
 Collaborate with Integrated Marketing colleagues in planning and strategizing websites
that achieve organizational objectives
 Analyze available data to make informed interface design decisions
 Assess and optimize the usability of new and existing websites
 Maintain and expand the consistent look, tone and feel of websites across campus
10% - Research, Development and Training
 Research other institutions to assess best practices in higher education web design
 Stay up to date on industry-wide design trends and standards
 Stay up to date on web standards (HTML5, CSS3) and best practices
 Manage student interns as needed

Level of Freedom:
The Web Interface Designer makes specific judgments and decisions within the stated website
development philosophies, strategies and protocols outlined by team leadership. Decisions outside
the scope of established policies protocols are referred to the supervisor.

The Web Interface Designer’s performance is a significant factor in shaping and optimizing the
University’s web presence. A quality website experience has the power to improve the success of
students, faculty and staff as well as enhance the institution's reputation.

 General Web design principles and processes
 Visual design principles
 Front-end web programming languages, including HTML5, CSS and JavaScript

 Cross-browser, cross-device and cross-platform considerations

 Accessibility standards including Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and W3C Web Content
