1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Technical Director manages the Nightingale Concert Hall (NCH) facilities in the University of
Nevada, Reno Music and Dance Department. This individual collaborates with faculty and the
community in providing leadership, event planning and scheduling, management and maintenance of
equipment and materials, and compliance with safety standards. This individual oversees all
technology within the Hall. This individual supervises student technical staff and coordinates all
technical equipment set-ups and breakdowns. This individual serves as the NCH liaison for all events.
This individual serves the department’s mission to maintain professional management of the facility
and increase the departmental expertise.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

50% - Facility Operations
 Serve as the primary contact for the oversight of the NCH
 Identify the appropriate and effective use of equipment to enhance the outcome of events by
working with faculty, staff and patrons of the Hall
 Create and implement policies and procedures for the Hall
 Ensure compliance with safety standards for the Hall
 Manage the recording library
40% - Budget and Equipment Management
 Ensure that NCH makes a profit in order to cover certain expenses related to the Hall
 Manage NCH revenue and expenses ensuring appropriate expenditures are billed to the event
 Assess the need for and purchase technical equipment, materials and supplies
 Maintain detailed inventory of equipment
 Set-up, breakdown, run and troubleshoot technical instruments including computers, AV
equipment, sound and lighting systems
 Ensure security of technical equipment
 Inspect and coordinate regular maintenance and repair of specialized sound and lighting
equipment
 Remain educated to keep up with the knowledge of the latest technology
10% - Staff Supervision
 Hire, supervise, train, evaluate, and schedule student technical staff
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
The Technical Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Nightingale Concert Hall
which serves as a premiere campus venue for high profile guest speakers and contracted
performances as well for university dance and music productions. The Technical Director has direct
and significant impact on the quality of productions in the Hall affected by the functioning of lighting
and sound equipment and other technology, materials and supply handling and scheduling. The
artistic contributions of the Technical Director are highly visible to campus and community audiences

and essential to maintaining quality events. The position operates independently and has the freedom
to make changes to the events schedule and to resolve conflicts. Poor performance or decision
making affects the quality of events which may in turn impact community perceptions of the
department and the university, the quality of the educational experience, community support and
donations, and future performer commitments.

Daily communication with faculty and students in order to schedule events and to create and
maintain a quality performance space (or venue). Contact also includes School of the Arts
faculty and staff regarding the coordination of activities in the Church Fine Arts building
External:
 Event planners who are on-site during events and programs such as representatives from the
Office of the President, representatives from the Board of Regents, elected officials, and other
program coordinators in order to implement use of technology
 Commercial retailers to administer continuity of service and address immediate technology
issues
 Community leaders including government officials, artists, and other entities to coordinate onsite logistics for technology and resolve problems.

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in a theatre and performing arts
production, theatre technology or similar setting, scheduling multiple events and
supervising staff
