1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Graphic Designer and Communications Professional position conceptualizes, plans, models and designs print and electronic media within established university branding standards. The position also serves in an account executive role, meeting with clients to assess communications needs, discuss options and provide advice about po ssible solutions. Additionally, it is this individual’s role to research and develop design solutions for digital communications projects and mentor student interns as needed.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).
70% - Graphic Design
Create designs for department projects that include print pieces, websites and other materials
Perform related design tasks including photo editing, text styling, artwork production and writing requests for proposals in connection with bids for services
Collaborate with and assist other department designers and/or writers/editors
Use approved designs to layout or prepare projects for website coding or printing
15% - Project planning and consulting
Participate in meetings with clients to assess communications needs, discuss options and provide advice about possible solutions
Research and recommend cost-effective options for design and printing solutions
15% - Research and development of new initiatives; professional development
Research peer institutions to assess use of cutting-edge technologies and best practices
Evaluate new tools and software
Propose and develop new digital initiatives including video content, content-sharing partnerships, integrated marketing, user-generated content and social-network functionality, blogs, podcasts, widgets and mobile applications
Network with other design professionals at the University and local community
Serve on university-based committees as appropriate
Undertake professional development through study, training, conference attendance, etc.

Level of Freedom:
The Graphic Designer and Communications Professional exercises considerable freedom to design, arrange, display and reproduce print and digital material in the most appealing and effective manner and within established university branding guidelines. Although subject to supervisor and, in some instances, client approval, the position’s recommendations are of primary consideration in decisions related to the display and reproduction of communications materials. The incumbent works independently to meet customer needs.

Impact:
The Graphic Designer and Communications Professional seeks to advance the University ’s objectives with integrated media solutions. The position has an important impact on the institutional reputation, image and integrity of the University.. Projects must be completed in a timely manner with a high level of accuracy, personal enterprise and creativity. Decisions and performance by the position affect budgets, deadlines and relationships with University constituents and outside vendors.

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution

Bachelor’s Degree and three years of progressively responsible experience in computer graphic design applied to a variety of communications vehicles
