1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Director of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering (MSESE) is an integral part of
the management team for the College of Science (COS). The Director of MSESE has the major
leadership role in establishing the School’s vision and strategic directions in concert with the vision
and strategic direction of COS. The Director makes recommendations to the Dean regarding the
management of the School’s research endeavors, educational mission, facilities, and
development/alumni. The Director promotes alumni relations for MSESE and plays a major role in
development, raising external funds to make the School more self-sustaining.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

45% - Leadership of School
 Develop and promote vision and strategic planning for MSESE
 Oversee effective and cooperative use of MSESE space, facilities, and equipment
 Develop and contribute to special projects and initiatives to promote cross-disciplinary and
other research opportunities for faculty and students within MSESE
 Coordinate and promote the activities of the MSESE Executive Advisory Board
 Represent MSESE at appropriate regional and national meetings and workshops
 Supervise MSESE staff, including the MSESE coordinators for student recruitment and career
development, the William M. Keck Museum administrator, and the MSESE Classified staff
40% - Development and Alumni Relations
 Work in coordination with central development, the Dean and the College Development
Officer to create giving opportunities for donors
 Contribute to development proposals and material that support MSESE’s programs/projects
 Participate with Dean in face-to-face visits and discussions with potential donors
 Represent MSESE at college fundraising events, special receptions, lunches, and dinners in
recognition of support for MSESE
 Coordinate activities related to alumni and future alumni of MSESE
 Participate in annual fund efforts for the College and School
15% - Student Recruitment and Retention
 Develop and maintain contact with representatives of the Minerals industry and Earth Science
employers to promote student opportunities and keep abreast of employer needs
 Promote MSESE undergraduate student recruitment programs
 Develop and support MSESE retention programs
 Assist in coordination of scholarship and internship opportunities for students
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Director of MSESE is the School’s leader and representative within and outside of MSESE. The
Director works collaboratively with College leadership, but independently. The Director of MSESE

plays a very visible role in student development and alumni activities, and spearheads development of
vision and strategic planning for MSESE.
Impact;
Sound and effective decisions and judgments made by the Director of MSESE are critical to
increasing state, public and industrial support of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and COS and
for making MSESE more self-supporting. This individual is visible to the public, potential donors, and
current donors and has a direct impact on the public’s perception of the university and, consequently,
on potential fundraising.

Science, Geography, Mining or Mineral Engineering, or related field

Bachelor’s Degree with seven years or a Master’s Degree with five years or a
Doctorate with three years of experience in minerals industry and program/personnel
management
