Position Description – Coordinator, Statewide Audio/Visual – Medicine Page 2

1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

used for advertisement of the position.)

The Coordinator for Statewide Audio/Visual – Medicine, has primary responsibility for the support of all audio/visual (A/V) needs of the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) throughout the state of Nevada, i.e., Reno, Las Vegas, Elko, and others. A/V systems are used for teleconferencing between geographically diverse locations as well as classroom instruction. The Coordinator insures that these systems are continuously maintained and staff is trained on use. All decisions must conform to the campus-wide standards as defined by Teaching, Learning and Technology (TLT) and

Information Technology (IT). The position supervises staff in multiple geographic locations throughout

Nevada. Although the position reports to the Assistant Director of IT-Medicine, there is close collaboration with TLT with regard to system standards including hardware and configurations.

2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage

first with heading and then bulleted information).

40% - Technical and End-User A/V Support

Act as a working supervisor to coordinate the technical support for meetings, student orientations, staff teleconferencing, and other educational activities of staff who assist faculty and students with A/V needs both in the classroom and in video conferences

Provide statewide end-user support for A/V systems which includes insuring equipment is functioning and ready to go at the beginning of all scheduled meetings, classes, and events that utilize AV and/or classroom technology

Work closely with Office of Statewide Initiatives (OSI) to provide A/V and instructional recording support for faculty at clinical health sites who provide telemedicine outreach for patient care for those in the rural communities throughout Nevada

30% - Faculty and Staff Training and Supervision

Supervise professional and classified staff in Reno and Las Vegas who are responsible for the installation, programming, and support of all audio/visual technologies used throughout the state by UNSOM

Organize and present training for faculty and staff on the use of classroom and A/V instructional technologies and equipment

Interact with faculty to understand and anticipate their instructional technology needs

25% - Manage Technology Improvements

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or

the university as a whole.

Level of Freedom:

The position uses own judgment and has autonomy to resolve A/V issues as they occur, although any resolutions with a financial impact must be discussed with the Assistant Director of IT-Medicine. The

Coordinator is responsible for working with subordinate staff on unresolved issues and to insure systems are continuously maintained. Decisions regarding A/V system design can be made autonomously, but TLT is expected to be involved to insure conformity to standards, unless there is a financial impact as mentioned above. The position is directly called upon for UNSOM special events, including new student orientation events, hooding events, State of the School addresses by the Dean, and other events related to both UNSOM and the Clinical Practice Plan. Decisions on relocation, reconfiguration, etc., of existing systems are made autonomously by the position with the same TLT involvement and financial caveat. Through system design, equipment specification, and project management activities, the position influences and helps to manage budgets that can exceed

$100,000.

Impact:

Decisions made by the Coordinator have a direct impact on the entire UNSOM. A/V systems are used not only for educational purposes, but also for collaboration with statewide entities and, most importantly, clinical systems. The OSI uses A/V equipment extensively as part of its telemedicine outreach. Failure of these systems can impact patient care. In the case of technology project consultation responsibilities, decisions have both instructional and budgetary impacts.

4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and

innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
