1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Coordinator, Electrical Engineering, directs, coordinates, and oversees the technical development
and fabrication of experimental equipment, diagnostics, and systems associated with the Nevada
Terawatt Facility (NTF) research program. The individual liaises with Experimenters/Principal
Investigators (PI) to determine technical and engineering requirements and components (including
organizational and logistical aspects) for scientific and engineering projects at the NTF. The
Coordinator reports status of technical tasks and projects to the NTF Director.

35% - Electrical Engineering
 Direct and coordinate the development of engineering projects around a two-terawatt z-pinch
generator and the 100-terawatt laser project
 Provide advice on the viability of proposed experiments
 Provide direction to the engineers, technicians, and other technical staff of the NTF
 Resolve problems among technical staff and researchers involving task assignments and
engineering resources
 Diagnose and preemptively resolve critical equipment and outage problems
 Establish and communicate technical assignments and priorities for engineering staff
30% - Student Development and Management
 Manage, organize, train, motivate and develop the technical skills of graduate and
undergraduate students
 Promote a safe work environment and ensure regulatory compliance
20% - Experimental Development
 Coordinate with and assist NTF researchers in experiment design, diagnostic development,
and integration with the z-pinch and laser systems, including synchronization and timing,
diagnostics setup, data acquisition
 Design and develop major systems-related operations and experiment support
15% - Administrative Operations
 Maintain current inventory of NTF electrical engineering research resources and equipment,
computers, and sensitive equipment
 Contact vendors and research costs of needed equipment and recommend purchases to

Level of Freedom:
The NTF is a research facility sponsored through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department
of Energy. Research is conducted in collaboration with University researchers, U.S. National

Laboratories, and international research institutions. The Coordinator has a high degree of freedom in
directing the design of diagnostics and related systems as well as systems integration. The position
reports day-to-day technical progress and collaborates on decisions of feasibility of new tests and
experimental designs with the Director.
Impact:
The life-cycle management of facility research machines and infrastructure, experimental systems
and diagnostics, and the execution of the technical tasks is highly visible throughout the national and
the international High Energy Density research community. The work performed has a direct and
critical impact on the scientific success of the NTF and reflects on the academic reputation of the
University.

a research laboratory to include developing projects and diagnostics involving highenergy lasers and pulsed-power devices, and participating in research experiments
