1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the

The Coordinator of the GEAR UP Ambassador Program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs), coordinates the University of Nevada, Reno statewide outreach efforts to
middle school students in schools that have been identified by the Nevada System of Higher
Education (NSHE). The Coordinator oversees retention efforts through the GEAR UP Mentor
program which services GEAR UP scholars currently attending the University. Reporting to the
Director of Academic and Opportunity Support programs, the Ambassador designs, implements and
assesses the program to educate and assist first-generation college students and their families
regarding college admissions requirements and financial aid planning. The Coordinator supervises the
work of student mentors and graduate assistants to carry out activities which encourage the
persistence of current college GEAR UP Scholars. The position coordinates all reporting to the
Nevada Department of Education (NDE) and NSHE.

60% - Program Management
 Coordinate the University’s “Start Thinking About College” (STAC) Program for the NSHE
GEAR UP identified schools, designed to improve the college-going rate of low-income, firstgeneration college-bound students
 Design, implement and assess programs designed to educate and assist first-generation
college students and their families regarding college admission requirements and financial aid
planning
 Serve as the “point person” for college-related inquiries from assigned GEAR UP middle and
high schools
 Work with NSHE Liaison to coordinate NSHE campus-based GEAR UP activities such as
college fairs, college visits, summer camps, and special events
 Coordinate and conduct campus visits for GEAR UP students and their families
 Coordinate financial literacy workshops for the students and families of their assigned GEAR
UP middle and high schools
 Assist GEAR UP students and their families in the completion of the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and college applications at the high schools
 Monitor student academic progress of the GEAR UP student participants
 Coordinate dual credit college/high school program for GEAR UP students
 Collect data for GEAR UP grant evaluation and reports
 Document in-kind match for GEAR UP reporting
 Assist NSHE GEAR UP officials with a broad range of grant implementation activities designed
to meet the GEAR UP Ambassador Program goals
 Compile mid-term and final grant reports
 Train, hire and supervise program students to serve as Mentors
 Train, hire and supervise Graduate Assistants to serve the Ambassador and Mentor programs
 Manage Mentor and Ambassador budgets within requirements set by the NDE
 Oversee the development of all marketing materials for GU programs
 Provide direct services to students in the areas of academic, career, financial aid and personal
counseling

Coordinate student activities designed to promote participant persistence and graduation
Participate and assist in all NSHE GEAR UP trainings
Monitor participants’ progress for eligibility for funds though the federally funded GEAR UP
program
30% - Outreach
 Maintain a regular presence with assigned GEAR UP middle and high schools, including
frequent communication via electronic or other type of media
 Maintain regular communication with the SPIFs and counselors working at the GEAR UP
middle and high schools
 Review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) of GEAR UP students in conjunction with school
officials to encourage postsecondary education
 Identify business and/or college student mentors for GEAR UP students
 Attend meetings and professional development required for the effective implementation of the
State Nevada GEAR UP project
 Coordinate visits to all GEAR UP school including those in rural target sites
 Facilitate individual, group, and electronic program to strengthen outreach efforts
10% - Data Collection
 Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of participant contacts, eligibility and needs
assessments and use of program services
 Report to NSHE on all GEAR UP programs
 Use MyNevada to collect data on retention, class standing and enrollment status
 Collaborate with Student/Parent Involvement Facilitators (SPIF) to collect attendance
information through the state GEAR UP database
 Conduct scholarly research on best practices for program development
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to manage the GEAR UP program which promotes the
success of first-generation, low-income, college-bound students and to encourage retention of current
college GEAR UP scholars. The incumbent makes decisions related to preparation of workshops and
coordination of campus visits by students and parents. The incumbent must understand the grant
requirements and ensure guidelines are being followed. The Coordinator works directly with the
SPIFS, school administration, and 7th-12th grade students and their parents to monitor achievement as
they flow through the program. The position oversees the GEAR UP budget for the University,
develops marketing materials to promote the program, and collects student data and compiles reports
to submit to NSHE and NDE on program progress. The incumbent performs all duties with a high
degree of independence and consults with the Director, AOSP on long-range program goals.
Impact:
Accurate and timely information to students and parents is critical in the college planning process.
The inability to educate students and their parents regarding the value of higher education and the
importance of college planning will result in the status quo of Nevada having the lowest college-going
rate in the country and limiting the ability of future generations to be economically self-sufficient. This
position is very visible to the public and therefore has a direct impact on the perception and reputation

of the University and the program. The GEAR UP Mentor program impacts the retention rates of
current college GEAR UP Scholars. The Mentor program reaches those students who are not served
by other retention programs and has a direct impact on the University’s retention and graduation of
underrepresented low income, first generation students.
