Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Coordinator of the GEAR UP Ambassador Program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), coordinates the University of Nevada, Reno statewide outreach efforts to middle school students in schools that have been identified by the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). The Coordinator oversees retention efforts through the GEAR UP Mentor program which services GEAR UP scholars currently attending the University. Reporting to the Director of Academic and Opportunity Support programs, the Ambassador designs, implements and assesses the program to educate and assist first-generation college students and their families regarding college admissions requirements and financial aid planning. The Coordinator supervises the work of student mentors and graduate assistants to carry out activities which encourage the persistence of current college GEAR UP Scholars. The position coordinates all reporting to the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) and NSHE. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Level of Freedom: The Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to manage the GEAR UP program which promotes the success of first-generation, low-income, college-bound students and to encourage retention of current college GEAR UP scholars. The incumbent makes decisions related to preparation of workshops and coordination of campus visits by students and parents. The incumbent must understand the grant requirements and ensure guidelines are being followed. The Coordinator works directly with the SPIFS, school administration, and 7th-12th grade students and their parents to monitor achievement as they flow through the program. The position oversees the GEAR UP budget for the University, develops marketing materials to promote the program, and collects student data and compiles reports to submit to NSHE and NDE on program progress. The incumbent performs all duties with a high degree of independence and consults with the Director, AOSP on long-range program goals. Impact: Accurate and timely information to students and parents is critical in the college planning process. The inability to educate students and their parents regarding the value of higher education and the importance of college planning will result in the status quo of Nevada having the lowest college-going rate in the country and limiting the ability of future generations to be economically self-sufficient. The GEAR UP Mentor program impacts the retention rates of current college GEAR UP Scholars. The Mentor program reaches those students who are not served by other retention programs and has a direct impact on the University’s retention and graduation of underrepresented low income, first generation students. 4.
