1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Associate Vice President, Finance and Operations for Development and Alumni Relations (AVP
FO, DAR) has campus-wide responsibility for administering all gifts made to the University of Nevada,
Reno (UNR) and all its related non-profits and reports to the Vice President DAR. This position also
serves as the Treasurer of the Foundation and reports to the Executive Director of the University of
Nevada, Reno Foundation (UNRF) in this capacity. This position, under UNRF bylaws, oversees the
budgetary and fiscal affairs of the UNRF. The AVP FO works closely with the Foundation’s Executive
Committee, Investment Committee, and Audit & Finance Committee to establish investment and
financial related policies. The AVP FO oversees all areas of finance, including investments,
accounting, budget, planning, audit and the development database as well as other administrative
functions for the unit.

50% - Chief Financial Officer
 Serve as a campus-wide resource in areas of expertise including fundraising, activities/events
governed by state gaming controls, athletics fundraising, university fundraising standards, etc.
 Oversee finances and integrity of UNR’s related component unit 501(c)3 accounts
 Oversee the financial function to assure that there is an objectively measurable separation of
the Foundation(s) assets from the university; to establish and maintain appropriate internal
accounting controls; to assure that university assets are safeguarded against loss from
unauthorized use or disposition and that Foundations(s) accounts are not used for the purpose
of circumventing policy
 Be accountable for the accuracy of records of financial transactions and the condition of the
Foundation, i.e., oversee the investment of financial assets
 Act as designated primary contact for all legal and contractual arrangements for the
Foundation, i.e., audited financial statements, tax returns and other regulatory reports
 Report regularly to the Board of Trustees, NSHE Board of Regents, and donors
 Serve as a staff member to the Investment Committee and the Audit and Finance Committee
 Act as the University Staff member responsible for the “member institutions”, including but not
limited to, the Athletics Association at University of Nevada (AAUN), the AAUN Endowment,
501(c)3 organizations, and other fundraising entities
 Prepare annual operating budgets of the Foundation and division in concert with the AVP DAR
and VP DAR/Executive Director of the UNRF and present budgets to the Foundation
Executive Committee and Foundation Board
30% - Financial Management & Human Resources
 Participate in strategic and tactical planning sessions as part of the DAR executive team
 Oversee financial and business functions of division including financial policies, legal and
contractual decisions (with both Foundation and system legal counsel), and real property
transactions
 Conduct business planning regarding technology and systems required to maintain operations
 Oversee functions and supervise the professional and classified staff of Foundation
accounting, alumni and donor database, records management and IT management
 Provide input on division employees’ personnel actions, but not limited to, their financial impact

20% - Administration and Fundraising
 Represent the University and Foundation to donors, community leaders, Board of Regents,
trustees, attorneys, certified public accountants (CPA) and bank officers regarding major gifts
and the administration thereof; may include solicitation and cultivation of gifts
 Support the strategic planning and development planning processes
 Analyze and prepare strategic fundraising reports as well as planning
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The development division is a large and complex organization with multiple external entities reporting
through it. This position is expected to provide leadership in financial and administrative decisions as
well as in development in order to ensure the success and credibility of the division and the
Foundation. Additionally, as Chief Financial Officer this position serve as one of the three corporate
officers who is directly responsible to the Trustees for all funds, securities, and other assets of the
Foundation. The position reports to the Vice President DAR and works closely with the Associate
Vice President DAR, but has a high degree of latitude for independent judgment and decision-making.
Impact:
The decisions and judgments made by this position impact the reputation and the credibility of the
Foundation as well as the university. The central function of this position is a key to successful
fundraising and consequently errors at this level impact the community’s perception of the
Foundation’s and the division’s ability to be good stewards of donations. Failure to exercise good
judgment can result in the loss of gift funding, audit penalties, fines and the loss of institutional
reputation in the community.

Knowledge of:
 Federal tax law for non-profit organizations, trusts, estates, revocable and irrevocable
instruments, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities and other vehicles
 Thorough understanding of accounting principles and practices (Generally Accepted
Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Financial
Accounting Standards Board (FASB)) budgetary process and systems of internal control
 Computer applications and systems
 State laws regarding Prudent Management of Institutional Funds (Endowments)
 All aspects of fundraising, including capital campaigns, major gift solicitation and cultivation,
planned giving, proposal and grant writing, annual fund solicitations, development events and
alumni relations events
 Fundraising terminology and processes
 Accounting and its affect on the data and the accuracy of reporting within the various
databases

accounting, business administration or finance

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Bachelor’s Degree and eight years or a Master’s Degree and six years of
progressively responsible experience in areas of financial accounting and management
of a not-for-profit corporation or similar, investments, budgeting, policy formulation and
strategic planning, to include at least five years of supervisory experience and five
years experience in public accounting
