PHILOSOPHY 2200 EXAM 1 (10 Points)
The Mythic/Primitive and Pre-Socratic World Views
Take Home Portion is due on February 16, 2010
Discuss how Homer and Hesiod are representative of the Mythic/Primitive World View and why Thales
and Herakleitos represent a departure from this worldview. Make certain to discuss in detail why we
should take Thales seriously and how Herakleitos’ philosophy can be viewed as a development from
Thales’ philosophy. To answer this question fully, you must make references to the available texts of
each philosopher.
Conclude your essay with a discussion of how subsequent Pre-Socratic philosophy departs from the
developments made by Thales and Herakleitos and the nature of the development from the beginning.
This essay should be free from grammatical, spelling, and syntactical errors. Be specific in your essay
and aim for clarity and coherence.
On Thursday February 11, 2010 there will be an in-class portion of the exam worth 10 points. Exam 1 is
worth a total of 20 points.
