Senior R&D Engineer / Researcher
Mechanical & Biomedical Engineering – Ref. no. NUIG 44-11
An opportunity is currently open for a Senior R&D Engineer / Researcher within Mechanical &
Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), to design and
develop a novel cardiovascular medical device technology. The position is funded by Enterprise
Ireland through their Commercialisation Fund – Technology Development programme. This is a
fixed term 12 month contract post with a possibility of extension, thereafter.
The Project:
This project focuses on the treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) which is a blood disorder
resulting from the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) inside a deep vein of the leg which partially
or completely blocks the flow of blood. In the most critical cases, part of the clot can break away
and travel to the lungs, resulting in a Pulmonary Embolism which is the third leading cause of
death in cardiovascular disease, behind heart attack and stroke. Data from the US indicates that
up to 1,000,000 people each year suffer from DVT and Pulmonary Embolism, with an estimated
300,000 deaths annually related to these diseases [1].
The Person:
The Senior R&D Engineer / Researcher will ideally have an honours B.E. degree in mechanical or
Biomedical engineering with 2+ year experience in the medical device industry. Experience in the
use of solid modelling and finite element analysis software for design purposes is highly desirable.
Experience in the design, development and testing of medical devices would be particularly
welcome. Additionally, the role will involve concept generation, prototype production and clinical
testing. An interest in the bio-mechanical behaviour of materials would be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be expected to:

Perform research and technical duties as required for delivery of the project

Work with other researchers on the project as required for the project delivery

Ensure that research project timelines are adhered to and milestones and
deliverables are met in assigned tasks

Ensure that research project requirements in terms of documentation of the project
activities, milestones etc. are implemented and adhered to

Maintain laboratory notebooks, research records and generate technical reports and
data as required by the project management team.
Above all, the candidate should be a self-motivated person and have the ability to provide vision for
innovation and engineering a solution.
Salary Range: €25,776.00 – €57,547.00 per annum (commensurate with qualifications and
