NUIG-43-11 Inviting Expressions of Interest An opportunity is currently open for a Principal R&D Engineer / Research Project Manager within Mechanical & Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), to help lead the development and commercialisation of a novel medical device technology for cardiovascular applications. The position is funded by Enterprise Ireland through their Commercialisation Fund – Technology Development programme. This is a fixed term contract initially for 14 months, with possibility of extension for a further 12 months. This project focuses on the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is a blood disorder resulting from the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) inside a deep vein of the leg which partially or completely blocks the flow of blood. In the most critical cases, part of the clot can break away and travel to the lungs, resulting in a Pulmonary Embolism which is the third leading cause of death in cardiovascular disease, behind heart attack and stroke. Data from the US indicates that up to 1,000,000 people each year suffer from DVT and Pulmonary Embolism, with an estimated 300,000 deaths annually related to these diseases [1]. Applicants will ideally have a Mechanical / Biomedical Engineering honours degree with a postgraduate qualification, and should have significant experience in the design and development of medical devices, from concept to prototyping to commercialisation. Experience in bench-testing and pre-clinical testing of medical devices along with project management experience would be particularly welcome. In addition, experience in solid modelling and finite element analysis along with an interest in the mechanical behaviour of materials will be an advantage.
