The International Politics and Bioethics of Human Genetic Engineering September 30 – Schiff Conference Center at Cintas Center, Xavier Reception - 5:30 / Dinner at 6:15 – Conversation starting at 7 pm After billions of years of evolution, our species is on the verge of for the first time taking active control of our genetics. The human genetic engineering revolution will not only revolutionize our reproduction process, it will also allow us to eliminate genetic diseases which have plagued our ancestors for millennia and to select and engineer the traits of our children. And while all of this sounds like science fiction, the technology to fundamentally alter our species already exists. The genetics revolution will be the greatest opportunity of our era, and also the greatest challenge, and will have profound ethical, political, and national security implications. Author and technology and national security expert Jamie Metzl has testified before Congress written widely on these issues and joins the Symposium to discuss the most important topic being largely ignored by the global media and his new genetics thriller, Genesis Code. Jamie Metzl is a Senior Fellow for Technology and National Security of the Atlantic Council and Senior Advisor to a global investment firm. He has served on the US National Security Council, State Department, and Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with the United Nations in Cambodia, and as Executive Vice President of the Asia Society. A syndicated columnist and regular guest on national and international media, he is the author of a history of the Cambodian genocide and the novels The Depths of the Sea and Genesis Code. www.jamiemetzl.com Reserve places for you and guests.
