Tuesday, June 7 The Future of Energy: A View from the Frontlines of the Energy Wars Todd P. Schwartz, Retired U.S. Diplomat Reception 6:00, Dinner at 6:30, Conversation Beginning at 7:00 Schiff Conference Center, Cintas Center, Xavier University How are falling oil prices and fundamental shifts in global energy production and consumption patterns forcing the U.S. and others (Russia, Europe, China, Venezuela) to reconsider economic and national security policies in place since the middle of the last century? What makes the current turmoil in global energy markets significantly different than past upheavals? Todd Schwartz was a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State from 1987 to 2015, retiring with the rank of Counselor. His career assignments in energy exporting countries include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Canada and Iraq as well as assignments in Tunisia, the Philippines, Canada and in Washington, D.C. Todd learned the basics of the global oil industry from experts at Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, as well as learning about the geopolitics of oil when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990. His front row seat to significant events affecting the energy sector lasted for nearly three decades. The burning fields of Kuwait, the enforcement of the oil embargo on Iraq and Libya, the rise of Qatar in the liquefied natural gas market, the struggles over energy resources in the South China Sea, Canada’s role in the North American power grid, and our second war with Iraq and efforts to rebuild that country’s oil sector all took place during his tenure. Through this tumultuous era, Todd has been charged with developing and implementing U.S. policies in some of the world’s largest oil producing countries and supporting U.S. companies to capitalize on global opportunities. Todd grew up in Dayton and received a B.S. in Business Economics from Miami University in l986. Recipient of Superior and Meritorious Service Awards from the State Department and the Secretary’s Career Achievement Award, he lives with his wife Nancy in Mariemont. They have four grown children.
