Week of September 28 – October 2 Daily Five This week the students will be reviewing and practicing the five rotations for Daily Five. The students have become independent workers and we will be ready to begin guided reading groups next week. Phonics The students will practice reading words with the short ‘o” sound and use them in sentences. The students will practice writing words in the same word family. Ex. pot, hot, not Spelling – Short o 1. not 2. hot 3. pot 4. got 5. box 6. job 7. fox 8. mop 9. top 10. mom High Frequency Words 11. from 12. little Language Arts We will continue to focus on verbs. The students will learn that a verb is an action word. The students will also practice making plurals by adding “s” to the end of the word. Math Unit 1 Module 1 Number Sense – Tens and Ones Understand Ten and Ones Make Ten and Ones Tens Tens and Ones Examples: 10 ones = 1 ten 13 is 1 ten and 3 ones 10 + 3 = 13 3 tens = 30 Vocabulary: digit; ones; ten Please read over the day’s lesson and choose one or two problems to discuss with your child. If she or he can teach the concept to you, then you know mastery occurred. Math homework goes home every day, but Friday, in the red folder. It is to be returned the next day. Homework is not graded, but checked, and teachers keep track of whether the homework is done or not as a report card requirement. Our first timed addition test will be Friday. Students will answer 24 math problems over sums to 6 in 5 minutes (3 minutes for GT). Science Solids and Liquids Background knowledge: Solids and liquids are two states of matter. Each state has different properties. Solids and liquids can be described and classified on the basis of their properties. Testing can identify properties that cannot be detected by senses alone. Lesson 1: Students examine a spoon and a steel ball. They share what they know and would like to know about solids. Lesson 2: Students classify 20 solid objects on the basis of their observable properties. Lesson 3: Students describe and sort solids on the basis of their shapes. Lesson 4: Students examine the factors that affect how far a solid will roll. Vocabulary: alike; ball; different; solid; spoon; color; shape; size; smell; sound; texture; roll; stack; air; blow; ramp and straw. Students will record their observations in science notebooks. IMPORTANT INFORMATION All students MUST walk/run track every day as part of the state of Texas requirements for physical fitness. Please wear appropriate shoes for track, recess, and P.E. Please continue sending signed notes within 3 days of your child’s absence from school. Students must be fever free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours before returning to school!
