Week of October 19 – October 23 Daily Five This week the students will be introduced to the reading strategy of sequencing. The students will use transition words such as first, next, last and finally when retelling a story. The students will continue to practice the comprehension strategy of cause and effect. The effect is what happened and the cause is why it happened. Phonics The students will practice reading words with the digraphs sh and th and use them in sentences. Spelling – sh and th 1. shop 2. trash 3. dish 4. wish 5. that 6. bath 7. with 8. thin 9. shell 10. think High Frequency Words 11. said 12. want Bonus Word: weather Language Arts The students will distinguish between proper and common nouns. Common nouns are words that name general items rather than specific ones. A proper noun names a specific item and it will begin with a capital letter no matter where it occurs in a sentence. Math Unit 1 Module 2 – Compare Numbers 2.4 Greater Than or Less Than 2.5 Order Numbers on an Open Number Line Teachers will give an assessment when their classes have completed Module 2. Module 3 – Add Tens and Ones 3.1 Add 10 and More 3.2 Add Tens and Ones Please read over the day’s lesson and choose one or two problems to discuss with your child. If she or he can teach the concept to you, then you know mastery occurred. Math homework goes home every day, but Friday, in the red folder. It is to be returned the next day. Homework is not graded, but checked, and teachers keep track of whether the homework is done or not as a report card requirement. Timed math fact test goal sheets are to be kept in the back pocket of your child’s red folder in order for you to know what facts to study each week. Science Solids and Liquids Background knowledge: Solids and liquids are two states of matter. Each state has different properties. Solids and liquids can be described and classified on the basis of their properties. Testing can identify properties that cannot be detected by senses alone. We hope your child has shared all the fun she/he had in science class last week! IMPORTANT INFORMATION All students MUST walk/run track every day as part of the state of Texas requirements for physical fitness. Please wear appropriate shoes for track, recess, and P.E. Please continue sending signed notes within 3 days of your child’s absence from school. Students must be fever free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours before returning to school!
