Dear Sunnyside Families,
I hope this time of year finds you and your family well. I know that I, for one, am REALLY looking to the springtime
and the hope of some nicer weather.
As always, Sunnyside is a busy, busy place. Recently we’ve had several evening activities in which students were
able to show off all that they have been learning about. Our first grade students had a lot of information to share on
the penguins that they have been studying, and did a fantastic presentation which showed off not only what they’d
learned academically about penguins through their speaking and writing, but also with an arts integration in
conjunction with the Oregon Ballet Theater. We also had our “Night of the Notables” evening in which our 5th grade students showed off the knowledge they
had gained in studying a famous person who made a significant contribution to our world. They researched, wrote,
spoke, and created display pieces that helped educate our school community as to who these famous contributors
were. Well done Sunnyside staff and students. As always, I am SO proud of you all!!
Most recently we had our annual Family Fun Fest. This year we had a beach theme and it was fun to watch the
kids play games and enter their names into the different raffle baskets. Congratulations to all of the winners!! A
HUGE THANK YOU to our wonderful PTA who tirelessly worked to make this annual event a success!!
A few more important pieces of information to tell you about... Last week we sent home a letter from food services regarding the A La Cart program. That letter is repeated in
this newsletter. The money is deducted from your child’s account so we want to make sure you are talking with
your child about whether you want them to purchase a snack or not.
Finally, state testing will begin shortly after we get back from Spring Break for students in grades 3-5. Please make
sure your children are well rested and have a good breakfast before coming to school!! Thanks for all of the work you do as the parents of Sunnyside students. It is truly a pleasure to be a part of such a
fantastic school community. Enjoy the upcoming Spring Break with your family and friends. Here’s to hoping for
some sun!!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kiltow

MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH!
Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They can help children to grow and
develop, increase their vitality and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Encourage children to eat vegetables and fruits by
making it fun. Provide healthy ingredients and let kids help in preparation, based on their age and skills. Kids may try
foods they avoided in the past if they help make them.
Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits
1.
Smoothie creations. Blend fat-free or low-fat yogurt with fruit pieces and crushed ice. Use fresh,
frozen, or canned fruits (try bananas, berries, peaches, and/or pineapple). If you freeze the fruit first, you
can skip the ice!
Delicious dippers. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasonings such as herbs or garlic.
Serve raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and
cinnamon or vanilla dip.
Frosty fruits. Frozen treats are bound to be popular in the warm months. Just put fresh fruits such as
melon chunks in the freezer. Make “popsicles” by inserting sticks into peeled bananas and freezing.
Bugs on a log. Use celery, cucumber or carrot sticks as the log and add peanut butter. Top with dried
fruits such as raisins, cranberries or cherries, depending on what bugs you want!
Homemade Trail Mix. Use your favorite nuts and dried fruits, such as unsalted peanuts, cashews,
walnuts or sunflower seeds mixed with dried apples, pineapple, cherries, apricots, or raisins. Add wholegrain cereals to the mix, too.
Personalized pizzas. Set up a pizza-making station in the kitchen. Use whole-wheat English muffins,
bagels, or pita bread as the crust. Have tomato sauce, low-fat cheese, and cut-up vegetables or fruits for
toppings. Let kids choose their own favorites. Then pop the pizzas into the oven to warm.

6!Tips!for!Parents!&!Families!
!
TIP #1: Make sleep a priority
TIP #2: Prepare the night before
Children should get 8-10 hours each
night. Set appropriate and consistent
bed times. Encourage reading or
listening to soothing music before
bed. Limit the use of tablets, tv, and
video games.
Prepare their backpack & supplies.
Make lunch so it’s ready to go. Check
the weather report & pick out
appropriate clothing. Set two alarms,
one for your child and one for you.
Set yours 15-30 minutes earlier.
TIP #3: Use a morning chart
TIP #4: Neighborhood buddies
Use words and/or images to keep
your child focused on what needs to
be done (eating breakfast, brushing
teeth, etc). If you have more than one
child, let them take turns being the
“morning leader”.
Make a plan with another Sunnyside
family from your neighborhood in
case you are running late. Carpooling
can be a great way to ensure that
children arrive on time.
TIP #5: “When…Then”
TIP #6: Stay calm & connected
This helps structure your morning so
all of the not-so-fun tasks are
completed before the more fun things
like breakfast or play time. “When you
get dressed and brush your teeth,
then you’ll get to play”
Children can tell when you are
rushed or stressed and they can slow
you down by resisting. Calmly get on
your child’s eye level and explain why
you need their help, then give them a
task.
We hope to see Sunnyside students arrive on time and ready to learn
