Dear Sunnyside Families,
Happy New Year!! What an amazing year we’ve had so far at Sunnyside. I continue to be amazed at
how much our children learn and grow each day.
As 2016 begins, I want to ask our families to be mindful of re-establishing morning routines so that your
children are in attendance and on-time each morning. Being on time and ready to learn helps to ensure
that the rest of the day goes well for students. Remember that the doors open at 7:25 am. Students
who are here before the 7:35 bell can go directly to the cafeteria for breakfast, or to the gym to wait for
the first bell to ring. Parents, we ask that you refrain from going to your child’s classroom until 7:35 am
unless you have an appointment. This is important preparation time for teachers and we need to give
them as much time as possible to prepare for students. Thank you for your support!
The weather is now wet and cold! We do not have indoor recess. Please make sure that your child has
a coat/jacket, and that it is labeled with their name. We are happy to support students who may need
assistance getting a coat. Please let us know if we can help.
Throughout the winter and into spring, classrooms will begin working with different Artists in Residence
as part of the Right Brain Initiative. Over the years, we’ve had numerous amazing artists come to
Sunnyside and do beautiful art with our students, ranging from dance, instrumental music, and visual
arts. We are looking forward to another exciting year as a Right Brain school.
As we continue into the school year, I want to thank you for all of the support you have given the
school. From PTA to the Sunnyside Watch DOGS, to all of the classroom volunteers; together we can
provide our students with a quality educational experience that leads to increased levels of academic
achievement. I want to share the following quote with you as it truly speaks to the importance of your
involvement here at Sunnyside as a parent. “At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a
child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.” I’m not certain who wrote this, BUT I do know
it to be true.
The winter months might be dark and cold, but here at Sunnyside, the building is filled with bright
students doing amazing things!! I am always surprised at how much knowledge students gain
between winter and spring break. I look forward to seeing what our kids at Sunnyside accomplish in
2016!!
Sincerely,
~Mrs. Kiltow

Morning Routine
As we start the new year, we would like to express how
important it is that your child arrive at school on time.
While we understand that everyone can have a morning
now and then when they run late, all students are
expected to be at their desks and ready to learn before
the 7:45 am bell. Students having breakfast at school
may enter the cafeteria at 7:25 am, but are still
expected to be in their classroom by 7:45 am. Please
help us start our days out smoothly!
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ALL VISITORS MUST SIGN IN!
When coming in to the school during morning drop off, as well as during the
school day, please remember to stop by the office to sign in. No matter how well
we may know you and your family, it is important that we know who is in the
building for the safety of our students and visitors, should an emergency occur. If
you need to drop something off for your student, you may leave it at the office and
we can get it to them.
This also helps to reduce classroom distractions.
Thank you very much for helping to keep our school safe!
Parking Lot Safety
Just a reminder that the safety and sanity of the
parking lot relies on everyone following established
guidelines. With that in mind, we have developed
the following information for you to help us make
the traffic flow more smoothly at pickup and drop
off times.
Below is a map of our school for dropping off and
picking up your child. Enter the school using the
NORTH entrance off 132nd Avenue. Please pull as
far forward as possible in the student drop-off/pickup lane so more cars can enter and to keep traffic
moving. After dropping off or picking up your child,
please exit the school grounds using the SOUTH
exit onto 132nd Avenue.
If you are at the curb in the student drop off
lane, we ask that you stay in your vehicle so
you can continue to move your car forward as
other cars exit. If you need to enter the
building, please park in the parking lot, even if
you have someone waiting in the car. You may
not stop your car in the driving lane for
students to enter or exit your vehicle, or to
parallel park. You must circle around the parking
lot to get in line for curb parking or to find an open
space in the lot. This is very important to keep
students from running between cars and stopping
traffic flow.
Your patience is appreciated. We have a large
number of families who choose to transport their
children to and from school and the wait time has
increased over the past few years. When everyone
can follow the drop off/pick up protocol, things will
run more smoothly. If you have questions/concerns
about our parking lot procedures, please feel free
to contact the office staff at 503-353-5620. The
safety of our students and families is very
important. Thank you for your cooperation.
Notes&from&the&Nurse
If you haven’t ready done so, please take the time to
get your student’s immunizations up-to-date.
The
annual state immunization report is due to the
Clackamas County Health Department in January. This
means that students not current with their
immunizations and those with a previous religious
exemption that has not been converted to a nonmedical exemption will be excluded from school on
February 17, 2016 until their immunizations are brought
up-to-date. For a detailed listing of immunizations and
non-medical exemption instructions, please check the
district website (Departments, Nurses, Vaccination
Requirements).
For
immunization clinic information,
please call the Clackamas
County Health Department at
503-655-8471 or your health
care provider’s office.
Share time, not the flu virus with your family
With the winter season upon us, families and friends
often gather in close quarters. All of this can lead to
more exposure to germs. So how do you stay flu free?
The best protection against the flu is to get a flu shot.
But there are other ways to keep you and your family
healthy this winter season. Follow these simple steps to
stop the spread of germs:
●Wash your hands often with soap and water or an
alcohol-based hand rub.
●Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs
spread this way.
●Try to avoid close contact with people who are ill.
●Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and
exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and
eat healthy.
●Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you
cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use.
If your child does get the flu, please remember that
students must be 24 hours free of fevers above 100.5°
without the use of fever-reducing medications before
returning to school and all related activities.
How do I get a flu shot?
Many drug stores, the
Clackamas County Health Department and your
doctor’s office provide the vaccination.

Counselor’s Corner
Sunnyside students will be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge for the second year in a row this
month, from January 25th to January 29th. This program asks schools to devote one week at school to
performing as many acts of kindness as possible choosing from a 50 item checklist. A nonprofit organization
called Kids for Peace, founded in 2006, began this program several years ago. Over 2 million students around
the world participated last year performing 109,344,450 acts of kindness! Currently there are 4,339,106
students in 6,871 schools registered for The Great Kindness Challenge. Wow!
This year’s goal is to engage 8 million students. Kids for Peace’s ultimate goal is to be in all 140,000 US
schools and every country by 2020. Currently they are in 36 countries, including Iraq, Pakistan, India and
Australia. Among other things, they donate and gather supplies for Ebola health care workers in Liberia, and
gather supplies for schools in Kenya.
Doing acts of kindness is fun but it’s also a great way to help change the world for the better. Jill McManigal, CoFounder and Executive Director of Kids for Peace, has said, "I hope kids can create the world they want to grow
up in." I think students who participate will find that even small acts can make such a big difference. One kind act
after kind act after kind act makes kindness a habit, one I think we’d all like to see more of in the world!
Here is a small copy of the checklist. Older students will receive individual checklists while younger ones will
perform them as a class. Please support your children in helping to make kindness a habit in their lives.
