Mount Scott Messenger 11201 SE Stevens Road Happy Valley OR 97086 Phone: 503-353-5500 Fax: 503-353-5515 November 2015/16 Dear Mount Scott Families, • I have talked with a few parents about our new math adoption (enVisionsmath) and the more I learn about this curriculum the more impressed I am! It is focused, explores a variety of strategies, articulates from grade to grade and uses mathematics to promote problem solving and reasoning. What parents will notice and appreciate is that enVisionsmath goes beyond rote arithmetic drill that describes much of how we learned math. You may enjoy this short article about mathematics and Common Core Standards http://www.nclack.k12.or.us/cms/lib6/OR01000992/Centricity/Domain/ 2262/Big%20Picture%20Common%20Core%20Math%20.pdf This link is also available on our webpage. Several parents have asked about working with their student on math homework- YES Please do that! Two important ideas that will help your child…there is not one way to solve a math problemthere are many and the more strategies a student knows the more understanding they have. Strong mathematicians can explain their thinking and their misconceptions- talk to your student about how and why they solved a specific problem. Teachers will be sending home a parent friendly information sheet explaining the concept (Topic) that they are teaching to help with these conversations with your child. • The PTO Carnival was once again fantastic! There are many people to thank to make this event happen. What was extraordinary about this year is how many parents just stepped up to help in the moment! It reminded me of a large family gathering where people just rolled up their sleeves and found a place to help. During these events and having the opportunity to connect with families I am constantly reminded how blessed I am to be part of the Mount Scott community. I want to thank LeeAnn Starrett, Kara Kornish, Cara Brown, Jennifer Marcoe, Stephanie Ferry, Juliana Patrick, Brandi Hamiliton and others for their organization of the Carnival. Congratulations to this year’s Pie Eating Champions - Summer A. and Matthew T. • Please remember to have your child dress for the weather (coats, hats, etc). Mount Scott students will go outside for recess every day! I hope you, your family, and friends have a chance to spend time together this Thanksgiving and give thanks and appreciation to the loved ones that surround you. M O U N T S C O T T M E S S E N G E R P A G E 3 Dear Mount Scott Families, Next month we will be working on the canned food drive. The canned food drive is when each student brings in food cans to the school, like: tuna, soups, beans, veggies, milks, fruits, peanut butter, dry foods, etc... Your donations will go to the Lions and Elks to help North Clackamas families. The main goal this year is to surpass 1,400 cans. The classes that bring the most cans can win The Golden Can! Student Leadership would like to thank the families for their donations. One of our Holiday blessings is the opportunity to work with students, families, and staff members who are dedicated to supporting the children of Clackamas County. Happy Holidays! STUDENT LEADERSHIP NEED A TAX WRITE OFF ??? ADOPT-‐‑A-‐‑CLASS is a great way to make a year end donation that benefits our students as well as you. Adopt-‐‑A-‐‑Class forms are available on the website and/or in the school office. Adopt-A-Classroom Every year Mount Scott families and local businesses have an opportunity to Adopt-A-Classroom! This means the sponsor adopts a classroom of their choice to help the teacher defray classroom supply costs or allow the class to do something they wouldn’t usually be able to. It is not too late to Adopt-A-Classroom! For complete details, talk to a teacher or request an adoption form from the office. Please do not call and request changes in destination. We must have written verification. We value the safety of your child too much to make exceptions. In an effort to minimize classroom interruptions and maximize teaching time, Mount Scott classrooms will celebrate birthdays once a month. Please contact your student’s teacher to find out when monthly birthday celebrations are being held. 3 M O U N T S C O T T M E YEARBOOK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!! This expectation is for the safety of all children and allows us to immediately monitor adults in our school. It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep our building safe. What should I do to protect myself from the flu this season? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. People should begin getting vaccinated soon after flu vaccine becomes available, if possible by October, to ensure that as many people as possible are protected before flu season begins. However, as long as flu viruses are circulating in the community, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. In addition to getting a seasonal flu vaccine, or if you have not already been vaccinated, you can take everyday preventive actions like staying away from people who are ill and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) (CDC)
