Leadership Development for Heads of Discipline 1. Induction Phase (3 modules) a) Managing people & performance session Aim(s): To gain a common understanding of how best practice approaches to dealing with performance can enhance the performance of colleagues and teams. To bring consistency in supporting the combined contribution of all colleagues by helping HoDs to feel confident, empowered and equipped when dealing with under-performing colleagues and aware of the accountabilities attached to the role and support available. Objectives - By the end of the session, delegates will: Understand the role of HR services in supporting HoDs in all aspects of managing people; who to contact and focusing in particular on the extent of the HRBP role. Understand how motivating, developing and giving timely feedback to colleagues can enhance the performance of individuals and teams Have explored how poor performance might manifest itself; the issues and challenges for HoDs; and know when to take actions and when to refer or signpost. Work with fellow HoDs on an interactive case study exploring a potential dilemma facing a HoD. Continue to build a network of HoDs b) Understanding Institutional Governance & Planning Aims: To achieve an understanding of the University’s strategic objectives; how we plan to achieve them through the institutional planning process and how we measure our progress towards those through the KPIs. To achieve an understanding of the University’s management structure and governance arrangements. Objectives - By the end of the session, delegates will: • • • • • Explored a potential dilemma facing a HoD relating to the ‘Competing Missions’ of a Russell Group University. Understood how the institutional planning process supports the University’s strategic objectives and how we measure our performance through the KPIs. Discovered what management information is available. Understood the overall management structure; senior management roles; organisational units and the key committees. Heard about the core institutional governance arrangements; delegation framework for decision-making and the basics of the HE regulatory environment.
