Module description
This module develops the knowledge and skills learnt in Law 1, ranging over challenging issues such as war crimes and
religious freedom, while also introducing the basic principles of two new core subjects Tort and Privacy. Crucial for those
wishing to study law at university, the module also has great benefits for those interested in other subjects as it requires
rigorous analysis of complex concepts in order to present fluent, persuasive arguments. The module is required if you want to
study Law at Exeter University, and is accepted by all other Exeter social science courses.

Module aims
This module aims to provide a foundation in English Law and the English Legal System for students wishing to follow a degree
programme in Law, Humanities or Social Sciences.
Intended learning outcomes (ILOs)

2. Demonstrate a good understanding of the development of English law in the sphere of privacy
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how Statute Law affects the Common Law

Syllabus plan
This module will cover the basic elements of two core subjects in English Law—Tort Law and Land Law. In doing so it will also
examine in the context of these subjects how Statute Law affects Common Law.
The topics will include:
• The basic foundations of Tort Law
• Development of the law of privacy
• Vicarious Liability of Employers
• Rights of the unborn child
• Law on psychiatric harm
• Law on rescuers
• Role of law in human rights issues such as freedom of expression, freedom of thought, concience and religion

Referral will constitute a second formal examination – coursework will not be included in the re-assessment.
All summative coursework must be completed before entitlement to a referral. The grade for the referred exam, and therefore
the module grade, will be capped at 40%.
Deferred exams will not be capped and will include summative coursework marks in the final module grade.
