Description - summary of the module content
Module description
This module is compulsory if you are a student on the Foundation Certificate. Its purpose is to develop the skills associated with
writing extended pieces of work: communicating your message effectively in English; organising and supporting your ideas to
develop a theme; and using sources competently and in accordance with academic conventions. In addition you will develop
time management, managing own learning and reviewing and planning skills. All these skills are transferrable and enable you
to approach other modules on the Foundation Certificate and your future studies in higher education with confidence.

Module aims
1. To provide students with study skills in English for researching and writing extended pieces of work.
2. To develop students’ ability to study effectively in an English-speaking academic environment.

2. locate, select and use appropriate information and source material relevant to your study purpose
3. make reference to sources using in-text citation and reference lists according to an accepted convention

Study Skills:
Development of the skills needed for writing assignments:
following the writing process: analysing essay titles, brainstorming ideas, planning, drafting, redrafting and responding to
feedback
time management: meeting deadlines and planning own work
finding sources and using University of Exeter library resources
using source material: note-taking, paraphrasing, summarising and quotation
referencing: in-text citation, writing a reference list, avoiding plagiarism, using Turnitin and adhering to academic
conventions
assignment presentation: adhering to formatting conventions
