university of exeter April 2010 Issue 7 Community Feedback Dear Resident, As Community Liaison Officer for the University I am always happy to meet with local residents to discuss community issues. Thanks to all those community groups and associations who have been in contact with me since the last edition of StreetWise. I appreciate that many residents are not part of a formal group or association, but I am happy to meet with any informal group who would like to discuss relevant community issues. Feel free to contact me at any time on the StreetWise number: 01392 264686 Email: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk The StreetWise answerphone is not an emergency number, but a way to record information that you would like to bring to the University’s attention at any time. I endeavour to respond to residents as soon as I can. I look forward to hearing from you Rory Cunningham Community Liaison Officer New Community Projects Assistant Hello, I’m Dino Rock, the new Community Projects Assistant working alongside Rory Cunningham. For the last six months I have been one of the student Community Wardens for Newtown and have got to know many students and Residents Groups in the area. One of my main projects as the new Community Projects Assistant is to work with the Students’ Guild, City Council and Police to develop the noise awareness campaign (described in this edition of StreetWise). I have also helped to compile a ‘Good Neighbour Guide’ which will be distributed in September to students moving into the city. The guidebook contains useful information about recycling, noise and safety and aims to help students living in private accommodation. More updates on the Good Neighbour Guide will follow in the next edition of StreetWise. The ‘Zip-It’ Campaign A new campaign is about to get underway aimed at educating students about late night street noise. The ‘Zip-It’ campaign has been developed by the University, Students’ Guild and the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary. The Campaign has also been supported by the Exeter Community Safety Partnership and several City Councillors who are keen to help address the issue of late-night noise. The campaign will involve using the popular image of the character ‘Zippy’ from the cult TV programme ‘Rainbow’ to help remind people to not be noisy when walking home. Already, several clubs including the ‘LemonGrove’ and the ‘Arena’ have agreed to collaborate and help spread the campaign message. A series of promotional materials have been designed and key clubs have agreed to communicate the ‘Zip It’ message in their premises. The zip-it message will also be communicated in managed student accommodation with a series of awareness raising events. Street noise is a reoccurring issue in certain areas of the city and this campaign will focus in key areas of the St. James Ward as the project begins. In the Community Survey, carried out at the end of last year, street noise was reported as a problem by 28% of respondents. Rory Cunningham, Community Liaison officer says: “We recognise that street noise is not exclusively a student issue, but we are keen to do what we can to spread the message amongst the student body. The Zippy brand is certainly memorable, and we hope it will convey the right message to students and other young adults without being patronising. We envisage this campaign to be a very long-term one – but we have been encouraged by the support and cooperation we have received from other agencies so far”. The ‘Zip-It’ campaign will be launched after the Easter holidays and will also form a large part of ‘Welcome Week’ events for new students in October 2010. ‘On The Move Again…’ Preparations are underway for ‘Students On the Move 2010’ – a continuation of the successful 2009 project that focused on providing ‘Community Clearup’ days and special collections for students during the last months of the academic year. The University has again provided the City Council with some additional funding and will assist in coordinating ‘Community ClearUp’ days with help from the Student Community Wardens. More than 100 tonnes of refuse was collected last year over a four week period and many household items were recycled and re-used – we hope to have a similar impact this year. Native trees have been planted outside the sports centre to help screen floodlights from sports pitches, a cause for concern for neighbours in Argyll Road. Scrub vegetation was also planted to benefit wildlife and enhance biodiversity. Money for the planting came from StreetWise funding, which the University uses to support projects which link students with the local community. Exeter City Council’s Environmental Health team: The planting sessions were organised by Emily Stevens, a second year geography student and project leader for Footprints, Community Action’s environmental project (pictured). She told the Express and Echo newspaper “It’s nice for the University and the community to work together and have a proper relationship. It’s a good way of getting diverse people on the campus to volunteer. They didn’t need any particular skills – they just had to dig a hole and put something in it – it was good fun.” 01392 265193 If you have an idea for a StreetWise project please call Rory Cunningham on 01392 263721 or email streetwise@exeter.ac.uk for missed bin collections, to request additional bins or to make recycling enquiries phone: 01392 665010 to report accumulations of rubbish likely to harbour or attract vermin phone: Civil Parking Enforcement Officer: Term time Spring: Mon to report parking offences phone: 01392 665901 (office hours) and 07850 299399 after 5pm s 2010 11 January – Fri 2 April on 3 May – Fr i 18 June Autumn: M on 4 Octob er – Fri 17 Decem Summer: M ber Help us make less impact on the environment by receiving StreetWise via an email link to the University Website.
