Community

Survey

Over the last nine months the University has been working in partnership with the Students’ Guild on a range of projects and campaigns to improve engagement between students and permanent residents in the city. Many of these initiatives have been highlighted in the StreetWise newsletter.

We now wish to take the opportunity to gather feedback from city residents to help evaluate the work we have been doing and to focus our efforts in the coming years. To help us gather feedback we have compiled a short questionnaire which can be filled in online by visiting www.exeter.ac.uk/ businessandcommunity/university/news A paper copy of the questionnaire can also be requested by contacting me directly on 01392 263721 or emailing streetwise@exeter.ac.uk

Please note that all responses to the questionnaire will be gathered confidentially and collated by an independent researcher.

When we have gathered information we will hold a special feedback event in September for any residents who wish to help us shape our Community Engagement Strategy.

As an incentive for those who respond we are offering the chance to win one of two excellent prizes:

• Six Month Platinum membership at Exeter University

Sports Park. (Membership includes unlimited free use of: two gyms, fitness classes, squash, badminton, table-tennis, outdoor tennis and indoor swimming at St Luke’s) www.exeter.ac.uk/sport

• Two Premium Theatre tickets for an open air performance of Romeo and Juliet at Rougemont Gardens – (with picnic included!). This production is arranged by

Exeter Northcott in association with Ludlow festival www.exeternorthcott.co.uk

We hope you can take the time to fill in our survey. Your opinion is extremely valuable for our ongoing work in the city.

The deadline for responses is Friday 24 July.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Students on the Move 2009

This Summer, the University is funding additional City Council services to help manage the potential increase in waste and to help curb the potential for extra street noise.

The ‘Students on the Move’ project is a collaboration between the

University, Exeter City Council and the Students’ Guild. The project

Students’ Guild. © Express and Echo.

recognises that students sometimes leave their accommodation on different days – and this can often lead to rubbish building up when refuse collections have passed.

We also understand that the end of term is an increasingly social time and we want to encourage our students to socialise responsibly.

The ‘Students on the Move’ project involves the following initiatives, which have all been paid for by the University:

• Additional student waste identified with special stickers and picked up with extra collections.

• Reduced rate bulky waste collections for students to encourage the safe disposal of larger items.

• Special refuse collection days for all residents in Culverland Road, Springfield

Road, Victoria Street and Victoria Road.

• Additional presence of Exeter City Council Officers in dealing with late night noise.

• A special noise awareness leaflet, with noise curbing tips, has been distributed to each student household.

All student households will now be aware of these additional services. Many

Student Landlords have also been made aware of these initiatives via Exeter City

Council’s Landlord’s Newsletter. We would ask Student Landlords to encourage their tenants to use these special services.

Cllr. Kevin Mitchell, Lead Councillor for Environment and Leisure, and Ward

Councillor for St James stated, ‘The Council is very pleased to be actively working in partnership with Exeter University and the Students’ Guild in addressing many of the concerns voiced by residents about end of term rubbish and party noise problems. We look forward to a successful ‘Students on the Move’ campaign and hope to be able to build upon these excellent initiatives in the future’.

King’s Road in Bloom

The StreetWise fund is sowing the seeds of friendship in Polsloe. Residents of King’s Road came together to plant flowers and shrubs in their front gardens, with the greenery supplied free of charge thanks to StreetWise funding. A day of planting called ‘King’s Road in Bloom’ was organised by Polsloe Community Association’s DIY

Green Force and the Student Community Wardens for

Polsloe.

James Cordle, one of two Community Wardens for

Polsloe, was delighted with the results. He says: “The idea was to brighten up the street through gardening with the added dimension of getting neighbours together. Some people have been living here for years and don’t know each other, but through this project they are bonding over window-boxes!”

The University’s StreetWise fund offers grants of up to £500 for projects where students, local residents and community organisations work together. For more information contact Rory

What’s On?

There are a huge range of services and activities for city residents to enjoy on our University campuses, including:

Summer swimming

An ideal place to spend summer days is the outdoor swimming pool on the Streatham

Campus. The pool is heated to a balmy 29°C and staffed by qualified lifeguards. It is a four lane

25m pool set in a large grass area. Opening times are from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm at the weekend. Costs range from £1.50 for spectators to £2.50 for adults.

There are two Aquafit sessions running Monday and Thursday lunchtimes 1pm-2pm costing

£3. The pool is at the rear of Cornwall House off Prince of Wales road. For more information contact 01392 262515.

Sport for kids

Sporty kids will have a summer of fun at the University Sports Park. Multi-sports camps are running from 27 July – 28 August. Children are able to participate in a variety of sports, and will stay physically active whilst learning many different skills. They will use the top-class facilities including indoor and outdoor tennis courts, water based hockey pitch and football and rugby training pitches. For more information please contact Lizzie Mason on 01392 264453 or see www.exeter.ac.uk/sport

Key

Dates

Graduation: Please note that this year’s Exeter Campus graduation ceremonies will take place from Tuesday 21 – Friday 24 July. Graduation is a busy time of year and we anticipate some additional activity on and around campus. Some parents may use this time to assist with moving final belongings from student accommodation. We hope this additional activity doesn’t cause too much disruption.

Help us make less impact on the environment by receiving StreetWise via an email link to the University Website. Please contact Rory Cunningham directly if you would like to receive this newsletter via email: tel. 01392 264686 or email: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk
