university of exeter Oct 2009 Issue 5 Community Feedback I would like to thank all those who responded to our recent ‘StreetWise’ Community Survey. The response was very strong and your feedback has already started to help us plan upcoming community projects and campaigns. Survey information will be used to help shape the University and Students’ Guild community engagement strategy - which will be available to view on the University website in November. StreetWise email/answerphone service The StreetWise answerphone and email service was launched last year to help direct enquiries from city residents with queries or concerns about students in the community. As we approach a new academic year with new students moving into halls and into private accommodation, I would like to remind city residents about this service: StreetWise Answerphone: 01392 264686 Email: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk The StreetWise answerphone is not an emergency number, but a way to record information that you would like to bring to the University’s attention at any time. I always endeavour to respond to residents as soon as I can. The StreetWise email/answerphone has helped me to address very specific issues in the short term. I have also been able to closely monitor ongoing issues, and to develop initiatives and campaigns to help in the longer term. Please bear in mind that it is also extremely useful to know when our community projects and campaigns are working well – this kind of feedback helps to focus our ongoing work. I look forward to hearing from you. Rory Cunningham, Community Liaison Officer StreetWise email service: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk StreetWise 24 hr Answer phone: 01392 264686 Success for ‘Students on the Move’ The ‘Students on the Move’ scheme has helped to clear around 100 tonnes of waste across the city with many household items recycled in partnership with the University’s award winning ‘Student Re-use’ scheme. ‘Students on the Move’ was a collaboration between the University, Students’ Guild and City Council. Targeted collections left many streets clean and clear The aim of the scheme was to provide focused refuse collections and a series of ‘Community Clear-up’ days for students leaving their city residences during the Summer. The project was developed after consulting with students and permanent residents. There was a desire to see more targeted support for students leaving premises at the end of the academic year. Students were encouraged to use special bin stickers which allowed bagged rubbish to be quickly identified and picked up by city refuse staff. The Community Clear-up days also provided an opportunity for students to remove larger items of bulky waste. Many local residents were invited to take part in the Community Clear-up events, coordinated by our Student Community Wardens: “This project has really made a difference to local residents. Culverland Road is almost unrecognisable compared to previous years! It’s encouraging to see the University and City Council working together and promoting these issues amongst students” Culverland Road Resident S tudents were also encouraged to recycle as many household items as possible. A special storage unit has been sited on-campus to store recyclable goods as part of the ‘Student Re-use’ campaign. The project is still receiving donations and a range of charities have been collecting items to support their causes. A special event entitled ‘Freestuff’ will distribute the remaining items to new students arriving in Autumn – so really, nothing is wasted! Thanks to all students and permanent city residents who provided feedback about the impact of ‘Students on the Move’. We are happy to confirm that plans are already being made for ‘Students on the Move 2010’. Law students from the University of Exeter are being trained by the Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau and then going out to secondary schools to talk about managing money and not getting bogged down in debt. Law firm Foot Anstey gives input to sessions and an additional grant from the Devon and Somerset Law Society supports the volunteering efforts of Exeter’s Law students. Julia Green, Head of Education at Foot Anstey, says: “Financial management is a crucial topic for young people as they learn how to manage their money and look ahead and plan towards affording the essential and not so essential items that we all aspire to. Knowledge and awareness will go a long way towards avoiding some of the common pitfalls.” This is the second year that the Debt Literacy project has run. Last year a pupil from Isca College of Media Arts said: “It set me up for my future and if I get into debt I’ll know where to go and what to do. It was great fun too!” Students offering expert advice’ The StreetWise fund offers grants of up to £500 for projects linking students with local residents, community organisations or local agencies.
