university of exeter December 2010 Issue 10 Community Feedback Dear Resident, We are pleased to confirm that since the start of term, calls and emails to Streetwise have fallen. The ‘Welcome Week’ period at the beginning of term has also seen a significant drop in negative feedback from permanent residents across the city. The University’s Estate Patrol have confirmed a similar positive start to the year with activity on campus. Having liaised with permanent residents, students and a range of support staff from the University and Students’ Guild, it is clear that several positive developments have helped with this year’s ‘Welcome Week’ period: Early Campaigning: Information about noise and disruption was included in mailings for all new and returning students for the first time. Our new Student Community Guide was also hand-delivered to students living off-campus. Police Presence: The Police were able to offer an increased presence late at night. This presence provided a crucial deterrent for anyone intending to cause disruption. Student Welcome Team: Over 200 student volunteers supported fellow-students at a range of events, offering advice and support when necessary. Although we cannot prevent every incident of anti-social behaviour, the University can act quickly to help resolve such issues in partnership with the Police. We are pleased with the progress we have made so far this year and would like to thank residents for their feedback throughout term one. Wardens also delivered a specially designed fridge magnet (detailing bincollection information) in partnership with the City Council. “We quickly discovered that Student Community Wardens and Bill Thorne provide information on Victoria Street’ many student households still had promotional materials from campaigns in previous years – our task became one of removing old information as well as delivering the message about the new refuse changes. This has been extremely challenging.” Sarah Hodges, Student Community Warden Students receive a great deal of information from lots of different sources at the start of term one – we felt it was important to provide students with direct peer support from the Students Community Wardens during this time. Particular streets in the St James Ward have been seriously affected by refuse accumulation - particularly narrower streets with restricted garden space. These streets received additional support from our Student Community Wardens who worked closely with Bill Thorne, Exeter City Council’s Education and Enforcement Officer: “Following a shaky start in some areas of the city, we have witnessed strong improvements in recent weeks. We are encouraged by the progress we have seen so far and are happy to keep pushing the key messages.” Bill Thorne, Education and Enforcement Officer. With live music, family activities and a cake competition, this positive event gave an opportunity for many students to meet their neighbours. The Planting Seeds Event Residents from Hoopern Street and Danes Road got together at the beginning of October to focus on gardening. Over fifty window boxes were distributed with some help from the StreetWise fund. The Community Quiz This well-attended event focused on bringing local residents and Postgraduate Students together for a quiz evening. The Post Graduate Union is keen to repeat this event next year. The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Greg Sheldon, was able to attend, representing residents from the Polsloe Ward: “I think the quiz was very positive and shows it is possible for students and the wider community to work well together. I look forward to next years quiz and other events during the year. The prize was also much appreciated and raised much needed funds for the Lord Mayor’s charity when it was raffled later.” Festive Events! Chris Hardy, Welfare and Community Officer for the Students Guild, has highlighted a selection of festive/new year events that city residents may wish to enjoy over the Christmas period.
