This Week During Class...

Language Arts:

In reading, we reviewed the five text structures. This is the way nonfiction authors organize their writing. The students played several games that allowed them to practice identifying the text structures based on the signal words.

We began the second unit in writing, multi-genre. Throughout this unit, the students will be exposed to multiple purposes of writing. We started by gathering seeds based on passions, expressions and persuasive ideas.

Math:

This week we started looking at fractions. We reviewed fraction concepts including the naming of fractions and how the same fractional amounts can look different. We looked at how fractions can be part of a whole group of items like 1/4 of 12.

Science:

We began Life Science this week. First, we watched The Lorax and discussed what we learned about the environment. On Thursday, we took a trip to the Cuba Marsh. Mrs. Davis, from the Lake County Forest

Preserve, guided us through the marsh. She stated that there are some invasive plant species that are harmful to the environment. She has asked the students to do some learning and come up with a plan to help restore the marsh. Throughout the next several weeks, the students will be doing some inquiry to learn about ecosystems and animal adaptations.

In the end, we will hopefully come up with a plan to help the LCFP.

Other Events:

Please remember winter coats, gloves and hats when you send your child in the morning. It is getting cold, and we go out for recess every day.
