Well folks, the sound of waves at
the Jersey Shore, sleeping past
6:00 and the golden calm that summer brings will soon be a memory.
It’s nearly time to return to school
for the 2010-11 school year.
We have had an exciting summer
preparing for another successful
school year. Our custodians (Dennis
Keelty and Pat DeNegri) led by Joe
Cecala have done a marvelous job of
preparing the building. It is shining!
We will have several new faces when
school begins a new year.
Due to increased enrollment in first
grade, we split the grade into three
classes and hired a new teacher for
the third class. Karen Natunen will
be teaching our new first grade class. Karen comes to us after valuable experience in the Chatham schools serving as a teaching assistant and teaching
at the primary level. Karen received her BA from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY and is nearing completion of her master’s degree from the College
of St. Elizabeth. She is also an alumnus of the Madison Schools herself, having attended CAS as a student. We welcome Karen and look forward to her
contributions to our staff.
Marisa Caruso will be replacing our dear Mrs. Ebbe on our fourth grade team.
Marisa received her BA from Keene State in New Hampshire and earned a
masters degree from the University of Bridgeport. The bulk of her career
thus far has been spent in Connecticut, where she taught 4th and 5th grades
before relocating to New Jersey. We are very fortunate to have someone
with Marisa’s background on our staff. Her experience with writers’ workshops, Responsive Classroom and readers’ workshop will be invaluable. She
will be a wonderful addition to our staff.
Replacing Joan Shrensel (after well over forty years) is Michael Watson.
Michael has been a successful artist for many years and is also a parent in
the community. Michael is inheriting an art program that was highly successful and brand new facilities in the two schools for which he will be teaching
(KRS and TJS). We are very excited to have someone with Michael’s experience and energy to guide our art program to its next step.
We are entering a new year with many positives on our side at TJS. The support of our parent community and our student body is foremost on our list of
assets. The PTO is one of our strengths and we are blessed by their contribution. This year the PTO leadership is headed by co presidents Karin Szotak and Brenda Catallenello. There are still some major volunteer positions
(the TJS jamboree for instance) that need to be filled, so please contact
one of the presidents if you can help out in any way.
This year nearly all school to home communication will arrive via e-mail.
Please be aware of the TJS e-mail address “TJS News”. Newsletters and
important missives will arrive using that e-mail address. There will also be a
weekly “returns” envelop. This will be a weekly opportunity for families to
send things into the school (i.e. permission slips, money for pizza days, etc.)
in a special envelop that will come home every week. This should assist in
making the return of materials and money to school a more organized exchange.
In the first days of school we are also having a very exciting sale of TJS
logo clothing and also bumper magnets to identify ourselves as being part of
a proud, Torey J. community. Please be on the lookout for communications
on this sale. It is great to be able to have the students dress in TJS tshirts for special occasions and class trips. It will also be great to see our
automobiles with the Torey J. bumper magnets.
On Tuesday, September 7th, our first day of school, please bring your children to the appropriate entrance and stay as they line up with their teachers. The teachers will stay outside and line their class up for the first week
of school. After that, students should go directly up to their classes.
Students in Kindergarten, First, and Second grades should enter through the Glenwild
entrance.
Students in Grades Three and Four should enter through the Woodland Road entrance.
Students in Grade Five should enter through the door of the Jaguar Wing closest to the
BoE Office.
As you know, the school doors will open at 8:30 each morning. School officially begins every day at 8:40.
We’re looking so forward to seeing everyone.
Please savor the last days of summer and have a great Labor Day weekend.

Communications
We are doing our best to ensure that communications from school are as effective as
possible.
One great source of communication is the
district website. This contains everything
from curriculum to school closing information. Each teacher at TJS has their own
website within the district website and publish a monthly newsletter chronicling their
classroom news and progress.
In addition to the website, a newsletter
from the school is published twice monthly
and many important bits of information are
sent out when the need arises from the
school and the PTO.
The vast majority of communication is
through e-mail. Please see Mrs. Empson to
add e-mail addresses or make changes to
the e-mail addresses we have on file.
Madison Public School District Mission Statement
The Madison School District will inspire
and challenge all students to be life-long
learners, empowered with the knowledge,
skills, and character to shape their futures, realize their dreams, and contribute
positively to the world.
Open House!
We at Torey J. welcome anyone and everyone to school on Thursday, September
2nd, for an Open House from 2:00 to 3:00
PM.
This is a great chance to meet this year’s
teachers, see the new classrooms and
meet old and new friends. The school is
shiny and waiting for our students to enjoy
it!
Please enter the school through the main
office and grab a school map if you’d like.
See you soon!!
PTO
Thanks to the TJS PTO, our students have
cultural arts assemblies, educational enrichment presentations, awesome art and a
number of school and playground improvements.
This all is made possible by the efforts of
parent volunteers. The school could not
prosper as it does without these efforts.
Please consider pitching in and contributing to the PTO. There are all sorts of
jobs, large and small, lasting all year or one
day. Whatever you can contribute is
greatly appreciated.
Thank you PTO!
