Gender, Politeness and Stereotypes

Group Work:
1. Sample three different magazines: one for male readers only (such as
MATRA, or ME), one for female readers (such as Femina, Cosmopolitan,
Her World, etc.), and one for general adult readers (Intisari, Tempo, Time).
What differences do you notice? How do they address the readers? How formal is their language? Comment on the differences or similarities each may have with another.
2. Ask two male and two female friends of yours to tell a story (maybe on the most wonderful/horrible experience they had). Record or note down their use of adjectives, boosters, or hedges, and compared the results with what has been written on ‘female language’. Make sure you don’t tell them what you are looking for in the data.
3. Do men gossip? If yes, what do they gossip about? Do women talk more than men? Research on this issue of stereotyping (that women talk more and gossip more) and write a short report, stating all your resources
(minimal 1 book and 2 journal articles).
