Some people gossip in order to exact vengeance, also because it gives them the impression that they have access to confidential information about another person. People gossip when they crave ntimacy and a sense of connection, also when they feel left out. WHAT IS GOSSIP? Gossip is casual discussion about others and their private lives, that is regularly unpleasant or false HOW GOSSIP EMERGES? People like to gossip because it gives them a sense that they possess secret information about another person, which gives them a sense of power. People want to be seen as being in the know when it comes to the latest gossip about others WHERE GOSSIP BEGINS? With the desire to work with others who carry their own weight is where people may choose to gossip. • ON PEOPLE INVOLVED • • • • Effect of Gossip Lead to loss of reputation Lower self-esteem Can lead to depression This can lead to suicidal thoughts • ON OTHER PEOPLE • This can result in people losing friends • This can result in the development of bad opinions about other people • Division against that certain person • ON ORGANISATIONS • Erosion of trust and paranoia • Negative work environment • Hamper teamwork among levels of organization Effect of Gossip • Lowers productivity of organization • Reduced organizational morale • ON INVESTORS • Loss of trust upon management • Reputational issues may cause investor to exit Introduction to the case There are 2 wings in the local association here, one the men's the other the women's. • So the men's wing has been in play for close to 2 decades but the women's wing has just been created like 2 years or so • Concerning this, the men's wing put forth a plea stating the women's wing to give an amount of 1 lakh to get placed. • In the general body meeting the women had, several discussions on this were meant to be restricted only to the women's wing; why the men's wing needed the money after being established for such a long time, why (certain people) required the money to reach them, how they are not gonna adhere to paying the amount etc. • This was somehow leaked to the men's wing from the women's wing and since the locality is closely bound, people outside the association found out about this gossip. • In the combined meeting held with this regard, the men's wing requested the women's wing to not indulge in such gossip and dig unnecessary holes. • On the whole, the ones who spread the gossip played their ball in both courts perhaps were identified as well. Problems Caused • • • • • Misunderstanding was created between the two wings. Erosion of trust and morale. Lost productivity and wasted time. Divisiveness among members as people took sides. It gave the association a bad name in the eyes of the outsiders.
