Kindergarten News for the weeks of: February 15-26 email: kathleen.brawley@lz95.org phone: 847-540-4791 Special Events in March March is a fun month in kindergarten! On Wednesday the 16th, we will take a field trip to Ryerson Woods to learn about making maple syrup. The following day, we will make pancakes and enjoy tasting real maple syrup! We will also be learning about Hawaii (sea life, transportation, maps, volcanoes, etc.) and we will take a “trip” to Hawaii for a beach party on the last day before Spring Break. Aloha! Literacy We continue to read a variety of non-fiction books. Among the things we have have enjoyed learning about are: the presidents, making pizza, building a house, healthy habits, and dental health. We are working on identifying the main topic and listing details. We are also learning to think about things we would like to learn more about. Writing We continue to work on non-fiction and “how-to” writing. Many friends are having fun creating “how-to” books using thumbprint art. You may have noticed some messy thumbs and finger tips! We continue to work on spacing, writing sight words correctly, and using punctuation. Math Science/Social Studies We learned about the addition symbol and the commutative property of addition (5+2=7, 2+5=7). We re-visited the “think big, count small” strategy for addition…we say the larger number first and then count on to get the total (3…4, 5 as opposed to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 when adding 3+2). We have been practicing this strategy throughout the year. We are also working on making combinations of 10. We had fun playing “make 10 Memory” and “Total Ten” *We learned about things we can do to keep healthy. *We read fiction and nonfiction books about taking care of our teeth. *We learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln
