Kindergarten News February 1-February 11 Literacy We continue our study of nonfiction. We learned that authors do things to help us figure out new and important words, and we spent time reviewing non-fiction text features (Table of Contents, Index, Glossary). We talked about ways that these features can help us as readers. We know that not all non-fiction books have all of these features, but may have other features such as headings, captions, and labels. Math -We worked on identifying and sorting 3D objects, and we also spent some time reviewing 2D shapes. The rhombus and the trapezoid seem to be the most challenging for many friends, so we will continue to work on those! -We continue to work on identifying and building teen numbers. Our goal for the second trimester is to identify all of the numbers from 1-20 or higher. Writing -We continue to learn more about “How-To” writing. The kindergartners are working on their own “how-to” books. We learned that “how-to” books teach us how to do something, have steps in order, and use words and pictures to give the directions. -This week, we made cards for special people. Valentine’s Day was a great opportunity to put our writing skills to work in a meaningful way. The cards and envelopes are always popular choices for our kindergarten writers! Science and Social Studies We continued to learn about animals in winter, finishing up with Groundhog Day! We read some fun non-fiction books about shadows and were happy to hear that the groundhog did not see his shadow. Hopefully that means spring is coming soon! Looking Ahead… *Due to a schedule conflict, we will need to reschedule our Reading Circles for the month of May. The original date was Thursday May 19th…the new date will be Friday May 13th at 10:30 and 2:15. Please let me know if you can join us for this or any of our other upcoming dates. The dates and sign-up sheet can be found on our website here: http://www.lz95.org/assets/1/6/Reading_Circles.pdf *Seth Paine field day will take place on Thursday June 3rd. The whole school will be going to the high school for the morning and returning around noon. More information will be forthcoming as the date draws nearer, but there will be NO AFTERNOON KINDERGARTEN on this day, and morning kindergartners will be coming home later than usual. Valentine’s Day Thank you for working with your child to prepare Valentines for our classmates. They enjoyed passing them out, and had a great time at our party today. Thank you to everyone who helped with planning and putting the parties together, particularly our wonderful room parents. 100th Day of School Thank you for helping to create a collection of 100 things with your child. We enjoyed seeing each other’s collections! We had fun stacking 100 cups, looking around the room for 100 numbers, and writing about things we would (and would not) want 100 of. The most popular activity of the day was stringing 100 fruit loops to make a necklace. We are experts at counting to 100 by 10s! Read to Succeed For those families participating in the Six Flags Read to Succeed program, the deadline for submitting your child’s reading log is Monday February 22. Six Flags tickets earned through this program usually arrive at school some time in the spring. If you need a new copy of the reading log, please let me know. The log can also be found here: http://static.sixflags.com/readtosu cceed/Y20132014/ReadToSucceed_St udent_Reading_Log_20132014.pdf Healthy Snacks This is just a reminder to please send a small, healthy snack if your child would like to have a snack at school. Some friends choose not to have a snack some days, and that is perfectly fine. Please avoid things such as chips, cookies, and sweets. Please read labels carefully and avoid anything containing nuts. Thank you!
